motorcycle accident...title in my name still

I sold my zx6r to an MH member JROD0689. He has also sold the bike to someone else not too long ago.

I get mail from progressive about a motorcycle accident involving my old bike. Apparently both guys haven't switched the title from my name to theirs.

I did all appropriate paperwork, and I still have the email from the DPS confirming I gave them notice of the sale

I also have a copy of both the bill of sale and a copy of the title I signed over the day I sold the bike. Have I protected myself against any liability even though the new owners have not switched the title to their name?

What else would I need to do, I don't want any liability since I haven't seen or owned the bike since early October.

sounds like you've done everything.

i've started taking the plates off when i sell a bike, that way they'll at least to get a temp plate or run "dirty"

they get a BOS when they leave.

that, or do it at the title office and watch them get it done

It's also a good place for someone to give you several thousand in cash

Sounds like you covered the bases.

Always take the plates when selling a vehicle.

Dude, cashier's check! Tell them to print it on your name and both you and the seller are safe in case somebody steals the check. Also, with cashier's check, you know the money is there...

What if it is a fake/forged cashier's check?

Don't really have any answer as to what is better. I just wanted to put it out there that there are plenty of forged/fake cashier's checks and money orders going around. So it might give a false sense of security.

happened to me recently. the ex-wife's Katana was in my name. she wanted to sell it so i filled out a bill of sale and she sold it. make copies of the title i signed, and copies of the BOS. month or two later we get a letter from DPS saying there was an accident involving said motorcycle. apparently the kid hit a car and was killed, and the owner of the car was trying to come after for me for damages. i sent them a copy of the BOS and havent heard from them since.
