+1000000 on motercycles unlimited. Patrick knows his and alot of people on here are going to tell you the exact same thing. As far as first bike just get what you want but dont be stupid about it. What I mean is you probably dont want a busa or 14 for your first bike. I started with a 900 so I'm not on the start with a 250 bandwagon. You said you had 20 years experience so I guess your at the least 27ish. Your probably more than mature enough to respect the power of a 600. As far as 12k mileage when you find a bike you like start it when you get there and let it get up to temp and listen for the tick of valves. That will tell ya if it needs a valve adjustment which is gonna set you back about $600.

12k miles is no where near high mileage.....When I sold my 06 gsxr 600 it had 23k miles, and I wouldnt consider that too high. 30k+ and i start looking at the bike a little closer. FWIW, at 23k miles I still have the stock clutch and it was still just like new (even with many, many hard drag launches). get up in the 12k-15k mileage range you have to start looking at brake pads, chain and sprockets, make sure the air filter has been changed, etc....

22k on a 05 r6 and 30K on a 01 gsxr6 w/ no problems other than standard chain/brakes maintenance and oil changes.
