Question Noob questions

I'm interested in getting my first bike and need some helpful input. I have ridden a couple of my friends bikes in the past so I know I'm leaning towards an R6 or GXSR 600. What is considered high mileage for a sport bike of that class? I see a lot of bikes with around 12K and up for really reasonable prices. Kinda makes me wonder if thats the "mileage mark" where they start having maintenance issues. What kind of issues should I expect if I buy a bike with kinda mileage? I'm aware that question is based on how the owner maintained the bike and how it was treated. So any input is greatly appreciated.

How much riding have you done?
I say CBR or Ninja 250.
That being said, bikes are capable of high mileage like a car. Most people just don't ride that much. But as you already mentioned, it can also depend on how the PO has treated it.

I have ridden a 2006 cbr 1000, 03 R1, 06 R6 raven, 07 GXSR 600, and couple of harley's as well. A guy I went to high school bought a ninja 250 and I killed him with my Honda cr 500 lol. I obviously not an experienced street bike rider but definitley not a novice rider. I have a healthy respect for power because i do own two fast cars.

Its all about YOU! I was given a CBR 1000rr from my wife for Christmas. Didnt even know how to ride the thing. I took the class before i got on the bike and then stayed in my neighborhood about a week learning the feel of it. Everyone said i was crazy, but again i had no choice thanks to my amazing wife, lol. I love it too! so good luck with whatever you get and always wear a lid!

I don't think 12k is all that much at all, I would not consider that "high milage" not one bit.

This. There's just a lot of people who don't ride much. And a lot of people that wreck bikes. The longer it's on the road, the more likely someone acted a fool and wrapped it around a firehydrant/light pole/gaurd rail.

I've seen plenty of SS bikes with 30-50k without major issues.

EDIT: BTW, high speeds on a moto are nothing like dirtbike or fast cars. Fast car handling does not transfer AT ALL to motorcycles.

With that said... doesn't sound like you're a total noob, so no need for a 250... just respect what you start with.

12k isn't a lot. Most bikes aren't ridden as often as cars, so even though they are relatively old their mileage remains low. I'm not sure about the valve check intervals on 600 SS bikes, but at 12k they may be due (or well past due) for one.

12k is fine. IMO the most questionable parts at that mileage are the clutch plates and fibers. Its a really easy DIY job and costs less than 200 in parts. I wouldnt sweat 12K at all. The clutch was always my concern until I did my first one using a repair manual.

12K miles on a street bike isn't bad at all.
12K on a trackbike, while still ok, prob is going to need some maintenance.

Get whatever you want, take the MSF class, wear your gear, be safe.

BTW, driving a fast car has nothing to do with riding a fast bike...

If the maintenance was done as recommended, 12k is absolutely nothing... nor is 50k+. You hardly see real high mileage bikes, because when you crash a bike, they break much much easier than a car. Alot of people crash

Well thanks for the input guys. I'll try to be patient and wait for the right bike to buy. FYI I was joking about the fast car thing because it was mentioned in that write up lol

I have close to 45K miles on my R6, I commute to work on it. I have absolutely no mechanical issues with it and it pulls just as hard today as it did when I first got it.

thats awesome. Does anyone know a good place that could do an inspection on a bike before I buy one?? I'm fairly confident in my knowledge of bikes but then again it is my first street bike. I'm more use to 2 strokes lol
