Philly has a rear view camera on his bike, just for this reason.

Eh, I guess I am getting old, but I've never seen the need to lane-split unless, as others have stated, I am stuck in an accident backup or something, especially on an air-cooled bike in the summer.
I have, however, been "bumped" from behind while riding a GY-6 scooter, but my long standing habit of positioning myself at the edge of my lane, and pointing my front end past the back corner of the car in front of me meant that I got bumped into empty space instead of a stationary car. That's right, I am living proof that the technique works.
Now, would that splitting were legal, I have no real problem with it and would likely do so during a commute.

I do lane split unfortunately. I try not too as much as possible but I've been (rode a motorcycle in) bangkok so I try to be as careful as I can. I dont want to hit others side mirrors but if it happens i hope they try not to get off, thats what they're for (and why their meant to bend backwards and forwards sometimes).

That being said, I've always wondered why a site thats as big as this doesnt try to get it changed.

The safe thing to do would be to allow whats called filtering thru stopped traffic (on and off highway) that alone would fix my issue (i ride a bike with a broken radiator so i have to stay moving)

but, if they wanted to go a step farther they could also allow you to split thru traffic going less than 25mph.

They just really dont give a + about us cyclists. they're running radio ads for "metro hot lane" or wtfever that is they dont REALLY wanna fix traffic. or they'd allow filtering. But again, with filtering i think they should really revamp how motorcyclists earn their licenses too, as well as regular drivers. theres a whole host of problems that need to be fixed and houston doesnt want to take it on.

If you fixed the radiator, that would also fix your problem. Just sayin

1) failure to use the turn signal
This is the most common issue on BW8 for me, even in a high-viz vest with a high-viz backpack. Most common offenders seem to be SUV's and trucks. "I must have just changed lanes into that red motorcycle"
2) being aggressive to other drivers/riders.
These are the people who think they need to teach you a lesson.
3) distracted driving
This includes reading the newspaper while driving, texting, applying makeup.

1. It's been proposed in the state legislature before but never passed
2. Allowing lane splitting may solve your traffic problem, but not Houston's
3. Bikes can use the HOV lane so there's that
