If this would have happened back in the day, everyone would be happy.

Lord on horse stops peasant with his wife on a donkey. Peasant tries to run from the lord because he doesn't want to pay taxes. Speeds exceed 15mph... Donkey crashes into carriage. Peasant and wife are fine. Lord cuts of peasants head. Lord cuts off wifes head. Wifes family cries to King. King cuts off their head.

Simpler times.

the race thing comes into play after the incident... On the actions of the family members suing.

Lawsuits like this are our country's substitute for administrative oversight. Even if the plaintiff is undeserving, the monetary pressure of a judgment will force better practices on the police. Of course, that is assuming that any verdict for the plaintiff is delivered not out of sympathy but because the police procedures were improper.

I hope police departments maintain policies where every minor offense does not result in a high speed chase, and that officers who chase people unnecessarily or in a dangerous manner are punished.

In your world, can they chase if a court has issued a warrant for arrest?

yeah... i think he usually sees a car doing 54mph in a 55mph zone and just decides to give chase. the person won't run unless they feel there is a valid reason to not get caught... if that is the case, the cop needs to catch them

true, and how would they define if it was a stupid lawsuit or not. I do think it is more than likely the lower class that has never had to be held responsible for their actions that would do this though.

What if the police gave no chase, and the rider sped off at 90mph and mowed down your wife and 3 kids crossing an intersection?

The police has every right to give chase when somebody evade them. They have the obligation to protect other bystanders, whom said law-breaker could potentially harm.

The dumb f*ck needs to be off the road and kept from hurting other folks. I personally would expect the police to do what they can to make sure of it - even if it causes him to end in his own demise - because people I care about could have been in this f*cker's path. I support the police officers in this case without reservation.

That's why you don't double up on a bike for one. No hauling meat. For two dude should have never e'en the driver of the bike should be the one getting sued but too late for that. Sorry that anyone loses a life but it is what it is. Don't run I won't chase. Law suits are getting out of hand
