I'd love to go with you guys, on this run but I've just been put on 6-10's ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$) until further notice. Probably 2 months.

For those who have never been on a ride to Fayetteville. Or on a ride where the rocks are getting thrown at you by the guy in front of you. Hopefully this info may help you avoid the radiator punctures. I recently went on one of these rides. So I got to witness first hand what everyone was talking about. Until then I had no idea. Even got my own radiator leak at the end of the day and I wasn't the only casualty.

For the most part you can follow as you normally would. The problems come into play when the guy in front of you decides to GAS it. Such as when entering the corner. This mainly happens on roads that are chip sealed. So let me explain my limited understanding of this surfacing process.

These roads are resurfaced by laying down a thick layer of hot tar. Then a layer of small chipped rocks are laid down and pressed into the tar. As time goes on normal traffic helps to solidify the bond by forcing the rocks further down which causes the tar to squeeze up to the surface surrounding the rocks and creating a stronger bond. But,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

As I said before the problems come into play when someone decides to GAS it. When they do this, the shear horsepower of these machines can and does tear up large, sometimes fist sized chunks of the road surface. And as these large pieces get thrown out the back they seem to explode into many pieces. Think of it as following someone who is shooting at you with a fully automatic shotgun.

So it is my belief that most of the radiator leaks are coming from these large sections of roadway that we tear up as we ride. Not from innocent little loose pieces that are always lying here and there.

I think it would be a real cool video for someone to shoot up close and personal. Like mounting the camera down low looking back.

So anyway here's my advice for all you guys.
1 Be very aware of this. Once you see it a few times you'll fully understand.
2 Get a radiator guard. They are much cheaper than a radiator and look alot cooler than a bunch of bubble gum stuck in your radiator.
3 keep a good following distance (further than normal)
4 If possible hold a tighter line thru the corners than the guy in front.
5 Be nice to the guy behind you by starting your roll on the throttle gently(yea right haha). So he may have a chance to adjust his line or distance accordingly before he/she gets pelted.
6 And JB Weld makes a product that is called water weld ( I think). It works great and fast for fixing those small leaks. Atleast one person should have some on these rides.

And then if you do get a leak..........
1st take a pair of small pliers, preferably neddlenose. And pull out the thin strips of metal (cooling fins) in the immediate area around the leaking tube.
This will allow you to get much better access to the hole and create a much more solid patch.
2nd let the leak subside. Once it does, try to force a small amount of epoxy into the individual tube thru the point of the leak. It will even help if you can take a sharp pointed instrument and open the hole a bit first to help get more inside the tube.
3rd then take the pliers and squeeze the tube at the point of the leak, effectively clamping it off before,
4th applying more epoxy filling in the area around the leaking tube.
5th let it set for about 20 to 30 minutes and the heat will quick cure the epoxy and you can continue on.

For those really large holes.. The following is a trick my dad taught me a long time ago. BUT this was when rad.'s were copper, not aluminum like most of ours is. So I'm not sure if the aluminum had the ability to bend without breaking.

1st same as above.
2nd once the leak/pressure subsides you can actually cut/break the tube in half and fold each end over on itself before crimping them off.
3rdThen apply epoxy around each end completely sealing it off.
This method does reduce the cooling capacity of the radiator. Since water can no longer flow thru that particular tube. However loosing the cooling from one or two tubes shouldn't make a noticeable affect.

Watch out for pedaling cyclists! They hurt worse than a rock to the radiator.

The rocks coming at are no joke.. Thanks for the info Reese.. I agree.. If you can get a radiator guard from Motorcycles Unlimited, or Cyclegear. I know it happens from experience.. Maybe Jimrad will come on this ride.. He usually is prepared for stuff like this.. now lets just hope if your getting hit by rocks you back off a bit or like Reese said..take a tighter line or so..but inevitably you will get hit by some...

So who else is coming?? come on yall.. if you haven't been before you should come...it's a blast!!

1. Ok, I've seen 7 radiators punctured on this ride
2. I think it's just random rocks that are causing the punctures.
3. Even while cruising behind someone I've seen these sticky tires pick up rocks, dirt, dust and whatever other is on the road. In the summer when we stop and pull onto the shoulder you'll see rocks stuck to the surface of a rear tire.
4. It's a combination of speed and following too close that can get your radiator punctured.
