I don't like the Mr. Knowitall attitude and the down-talking. But if you can't find a good teacher and you don't know how to use the brain in yer skull, don't try to go it alone. Yer far better off listening to Mr. Knowitall's opinion.

Two years ago I have never thrown a leg over a motorcycle. In 2010 I took the MSF course and rode a harley sportster for about three months. In those three months the only thing I learned was how to counter street. It wasn't until I purchased my R6 that my skill as a rider really started to improve. I haven't ridden any other bike besides super sport bikes and a harley sportster. If you want to be a really good rider as far as control, a cruiser won't cut it. I say stay away from cruisers if you plan to take your skill to the next level.

I did the MSF last May, rode a GS500 and FZ6R for 4-5 months then I got my 954. I still ride the FZ6R so technically I can still "learn" on a beginner friendly bike. I ride near everyday, I have at least 10K miles under my belt. I do wear gear all the time. I feel good on my 954. In all honesty, no bs, I wish I started on an SV650. I probably would still be riding it. But, I have my 954 now, and I love that thing to death.

I got to test-ride a cruiser; I'm sure I'd get used to it and come to like it, but it was such a far cry from what I'm used to that it just didn't float my boat.

I think a small standard, or one like metioned in the article does indeed make for the best beginner bike. Start on something that allows you to master the basics. I think that a sportbike is an excellent learning tool as a subsequent bike. If you decide to move to a cruiser, touring, superbike or anything else you'll have all the skills and understanding you'd need if not more.

PS article is very well written, love it!

The guy who wrote this is ridiculous. He makes some decent points, but doesn't know how to properly make said points without sounding like a douche.

Saying, "No successful motorcycle racer in the world started riding on a 600cc-class race bike." is just a blanket statement without proof. Where's the survey or questionnaire. I want to see this dude's research because I'm sure there is none.

I started on my cbr600rr and I'm fine. I'm not going to be "the next greatest racer" but I'm not holding anyone up on the streets and got moved to level 2 on my first track day... how's that for improving skills while starting on a 600? I'm not looking for any pats on the back, I just want this dude to stfu and get off his high horse.
