Cool UFO on SW freeway....

All,

I don't know if this should be in the safety thread. Ok, cruising at 70mph+ outbound on 59 past Sugar Land yesterday morning I saw something really weird. It came into my peripheral vision from the left, skittered across a couple lanes, it was shiney metallic, circular and moving fast. As it vectored in front of me, I slowed to avoid hitting it, and then it rolled off the road.

At first I was puzzled, then my feeble brain solved the puzzle: it was a damned metal hubcap hit by a car that played hockey puck on the concrete.

So, watch for those hubcap UFOs...and remember the squirrels are out, playing dodge-Ninja, and they are suicidal, and messy when hit.

I lost my rear cowl while riding yesterday.
Never found the cowl, but there are a lot of hub caps on the shoulder.

Wouldn't that be a IFO? I mean UFO is "unidentified" and you already identified it... just saying. And of course it was sliding and not flying... but ya know.

Always amazed at how wheels or hubcaps that fall off always speed up when they lose the "dead weight" that was their vehicle...and then pass EVERYONE on the freeway lol.

I saw one spinning down I45 once.....then as it slowed down it swerved into my lane and I punted it with the front bumper of my GTP, lol.

I didn't like the mark it left, but the situation as a whole was pretty comical.

My second day out on my current bike I had one nail me on Memorial. I kept my composure and it all worked out.

It's when they're still attached to the wheel, but not the rest of the car you really gotta worry....

MSF instructor told same story; he once hit an aluminum ladder.

I learned the true meaning of "safe following distance" when a dead armadillo came about an inch from from my tires - appeared from the undercarriage of the truck I was, um, tailgating.

...and that's why I keep a long distance, even in group rides when people about me leaving a long gap
