I suggest bell star, vortex, or Ride Smart-1. But I like Bell helmets.

If my choice was only between those two brands I'd go Scorpion without hesitation. Icons look cool, but they're usually pretty heavy and the build quality is hit or miss it seems. Barring any crazy closeout deals on more expensive helmets, Scorpion is about the best helmet for the money.

My opinion......Arai.

both are terrible "good" lids.

the BEST lid in this price range, is the HJC rps10. hands down.

and if you know where to look, you can get them with a spare shield for ~$275 shipped (and no taxes).

I'd take a Scorpion over any Icon.

i agree... but even scorpion isn't that good. i've had too many buddies that are wearing scorpions get concussions at the track after a getoff. i've SLAMMED the back of my head on the concrete after a high side in my gp-tech (AGV) and walked away not a bit dumber than i was when i started.

for the price range, i'm putting money that there's not a safer/better lid out there than the rps10. unless a higher level lid (there aren't that many) is on closeout. like that shark rsr2 back in the day when it was $250.

Scorpion, I would go with an EXO-1000

178$ ^ That's a GOOD price for that lid.

With the spare change you could change your oil, buy some front & rear brake pads, or swap to some ss brake lines.

Scorpion ftw

If you HAVE to spend now to get one:

1. Out of those 2 choices- Scorpion, no question.
2. Others in that range- HJC or a new Bell even.
3. My Opinion- Save another $120 and get a Shoei, Arai, Suomy last year model or on sale. These brands are proven time and time again. Although the HJC is still a very good option at your price too...

You'd get a good neck work out while riding

Never owned an exo-1000, but have a 400, and a 700. Both are great lids, but do have a little added weight to them.

If your only able to spend that much, I would get an HJC RPS10.
They are light weight and have nice airflow.

I would not ever buy an Icon. You might as well get something from walmart thats DOT approved. Icons are heavy, loud, stuffy, lots of head bobble, and dont really protect you from anything other than bugs... as far as I am concerned.

Saving for a nicer helm is also a good idea. If thats the case, I would go with a Shoie. The ones that I have owned (and wrecked in) not only held up but were like a Cadillac.
