Need muffler shop

apparently my car comes with 2 cats and I'd like the 2nd set of cats removed. Anyone know any local shops willing to do this? Basically I want the cat replaced by a straight pipe.

Good luck. Its against Federal Law to remove a cat. con. that is in good working condition, even if it is to replace it with a larger "better" one.

Most shops won't touch them unless they are already missing or known bad.

There are several companies who make O2 simulators which will allow you to remove cat. con. and not get a CE light.

What kinda car is this you are trying to modify?

And the fine is HUGE, $10,000 if I recall correctly.

And you can get fined up to $2000 for running your car on the street without one.

There is a section in the Clean Air Act of 1979 concerning “tampering,” which makes it illegal to modify or remove any component designed to reduce or control exhaust emissions, including intake or exhaust noise. Removing the catalytic converter on a car, or a new motorcycle constitutes tampering. So does replacing an engine component with anything other than stock or direct replacement components. Violating this anti-tampering law opens you up to a fine of up to $10,000 per occurrence. An occurrence is logged each and every day the modified vehicle is operated on public streets. That means a possible fine of up to $10,000 per day for every modified vehicle that comes out of your shop. (This is the maximum fine, not necessarily what the EPA will impose.)

What type of car do you own?

Sometimes the second cat is the better of the two. I used to own a 3rd gen RX-7 and it came stock with two cats. The first was a precat that was horrible for the rotary engine. I replaced it with an aftermarket downpipe.

Correct, federal law won't allow to remove the cats or anything related to the emissions system. But, if it's for race use, why not remove all four? is it a rustang?

if it's a Mustang, take a look at Pype's exhaust. They have a "mini" cat. con. x-pipe that will keep you legal and flows just as much as a x-pipe with no cats......

If its not a Mustang you could get the cat. con's from Pypes and have a shop weld them in.......(if you can get them to believe yours are "bad")

it's a lexus is350. The O2 sensors are behind the primary cats, which are welded to the headers. There is a set of secondary cats just behind the resonator. Per others on the Lexus forum, removing the secondary cats will NOT throw a CEL, and the car will probably still pass inspection.

I know that it's illegal, but I've heard of shops out in the boonies/sticks that will do it, or tell me to do and myself and they'll "fix the leaks."

You could always use the broomstick method if the cats are close to a joint in the exhaust. (say like in an h-pipe or whatever) Just remove the pipe and use a broomstick or other similar device to 'knock out' the honey combs inside those cats. Then the car will appear stock and such.....
