I skimmed through the rule book and am I right that displacement doesn't matter? Every class is basically an open class? How does a YZ250F fit into this type of racing?

Sounds right to me. The 250 would fit the age or open classes. They work fine.

I haven't ridden off road all that much since I quit racing MX in 2000 but I'd love to get into these. I have a DRZ400E that would need the dirt wheels put back on and I'm probably going to be 'storing' a buddy's 2000 yz125 soon, which one would be better?

How do you guys practice for these? SHNF? Any other riding parks in area?

The yz250f is a great bike for this type of racing. A 450 is more than you need, but a lot of people like them too. Rider ability determines the class you select, not bike size.

The SHNF is a great place to practice. The next race is right next to the forest, so the terrain is basically the same.
You need an off road sticker to ride there. You can get them at the Yamaha shop on 1960 or the ranger station. Lots of other shops carry them, too. You're supposed to have a spark arrestor, too. I've never been checked, but I hear that the rangers get pretty if you don't have one.

I think their website is down. Whats the typical lap time? How many laps before you re fuel? Are you allowed to have a pit crew? Is the trail clearly marked? I come from a motocross background and ran 125 and 250 intermediate and have never attempted one of these.

Pretty much....classes are based on skill level rather than engine displacement. "A" classes being the "pro classes" and D being "beginner/still figuring out to take my training wheels off" class. J/K!

Brandt, I never leave 3rd gear... maybe once in a blue moon on an open stretch, but there aren't many. A 250 4 stroke or 2 stroke will be the best of both worlds. not too heavy to pick up when you crash and easy enough to maneauver around when you get tired.

practice? ha! I'm lucky if I get to ride the race events once a month, let alone "practice rides". However, SHNF is a great place to learn the basics. Otis' courses usually have a little trickier terrain like more creeks, hill climbs (some super hard, some not so bad), water crossings, log crossings, etc. That's what makes it "Xtreme" , but usually there an ez route around the super difficult stuff (obviously the hard is usually the time saver if you can do it without crashing, etc.). As for other riding parks, if I can only squeeze 3 or 4 hours of riding in I'll go to a local MX track (3 palms Rio Bravo, Cornerstone, etc.) to practice hitting the berms, whoop sections, jumps, etc.

I think so, maybe 45 minutes. I'll be honest and say I don't know the answer to that one. Check via the link at the bottom of this post. It'll take you to the TXORR website.

typical lap time varies on the terrain and mileage of the course obviously. Otis usually keeps each lap between 8-10 miles (although we have done some 14 or 16 mile laps at some loactions) and that equates to about a 25-30 minute lap time for an A or B rider. I, personally, run 1 hour races and I see, on average 3 laps per race....I have never had to refuel. 2 hour riders do have a pit area desginated near the checkpoint/start/finish where spectators or a pit crew can help you refuel, rehydrate, etc.

Trails are marked pretty well in my opinion...If you RACE on SUNDAY, you get several hours of practice in on Saturday afternoon to check out the course and then an additional hour before the race on Sunday. Otis strongly encourages people to see him if they feel an area on a course needs more markings or tape. He throws up several hundred arrows per race I'm sure....by Sunday, the course is usually burned in pretty good too.

Come give it a try....it's a blast. With a motorcross background you'll do just fine....just watch the bars on the trees and get some bark busters.

Otis tried an ATV/UTV series last year....lots of people posted up interest and then never backed it up with showing up. I think he's sticking to dirtbikes for now, b/c the numbers are simply there for him to run a series.

Here's the TXORR website:
http://www.texasxtremeoffroadracing.com/Main_Page.html

and the event flyer for Feb 4-5

http://www.texasxtremeoffroadracing....w_Trax_Feb.pdf

Hope to see some of you there.

I'm picking up a yz250f tomorrow. I'm in for the events that don't conflict with CMRA, the kiddo and the lady. Not sure how many that'll be but Feb. 4 looks good.

Definitely in for some SHNF and 3 palms easy rides.
