A handful of folks here have ridden it. I hope to make it out there with and handful of others from here if things start to brighten up for me.

You'll find it aint all that.
It's so twisty that you have to concentrate every second. There is no scenery along the way (it's a wall of trees on one side and a wall of rock on the other. Steel guard rails everywhere. Weekends are over run with people, cars, cruisers (no offense but they move kinda slow) and COPS.
Week days are much better but there will still be plenty of all the above to make it less enjoyable.

Go do it, so you can say you have, and then find some of the awesome roads in the area that are better. We spent a week out there a couple years ago and really liked the Cherohala Skyway better.
Check out the Blueridge Parkway. , every road in the area is WAAY better than our best road here.

Oh, and don't forget the t-shirt.

At the risk of being flamed for not gushing

A couple of other thoughts...

There are several wrecks every weekend, sometimes every day which can screw up traffic.
Last one...

The guys that made that vid posted by the OP are very experienced and very familiar with the road. It is full of blind, decreasing radius turns.
If you, being from the flat coastal plains of Texas go there and try to ride it like that you may very well be one of the guys that mess up traffic. Stay in your comfort zone.

OK I will stop preaching now.

The Dragon is way, way past my skill set. I have a goal though: HWY 550 from Durango to Silverton over Red Mountain Pass into Ouray, Colorado. The scenery is fantastic, and it also happens to be home. Anyone here ever ride 550?
