'Busa + Drunk = Dumbass

Injured Man Shares Tragic Tale of Drunk Driving (link)
Quote:
HOUSTON - Timothy Simmons will have to pay the rest of his life for a choice he made.

He's talking about it in hopes of keeping someone else from making the same mistake.

Simmons lost his leg, his job and nearly lost his life on the side of a dark Houston road because of a drunk driver.

He was that drunk driver.

"I went out partying," Simmons said.

A sunny fun-filled Friday in Houston turned into one of Simmons' darkest days.

"I was drinking quite a bit and shouldn't have been going as fast as I was going,” he said. “I was going 190 miles an hour.”

After a night out in March 2011, Simmons jumped on his Suzuki Hayabusa Motorcycle, traveling at high speeds on the Hardy Toll Road.

As he neared Richey Road, he was thrown from his bike.

His leg was sliced off by a concrete barrier.

"I remember hitting the wall maybe three times then after that, I don't remember too much,” he recalled. “I was in ICU for a month. I was in Ben Taub for two months."

The motorcycle was going so fast, it continued for quite a distance without him. It was found with only scratches one mile away.

"I had road rash real bad on my back, broken pelvis, dislocated left wrist, dislocated right shoulder, dislocated elbow, torn tendons and nerve loss in my right leg and I lost my right leg above the knee," Simmons said.

That choice to drink and drive severely cost this 29-year-old.

"My family, my house, my leg. A lot," Simmons said.

Left without a job, he is now without insurance.

He was briefly granted Medicaid until he was dropped because he made too much money to qualify for coverage in 2011, prior to the accident.

He can re-apply this year but now that Medicaid isn't footing the bill, the medical equipment company is demanding he give his wheelchair and hospital bed back.

"Just mad that I drove drunk,” he said. “I should have been more responsible. Don't drink and drive."

Don't drink and drive? Simmons realizes those words may sound strange coming from him, but who knows the consequences better than he does?

"Don't do it. It's not worth it,” he said.

He's hoping to get Medicaid again so he can be fitted for a prosthetic leg and get back into the workforce

Like what, being supported by our taxes? Trying to get some pity? If I were ruler of the world, you get drunk and yourself up, let your family take care of your dumbass. I'm we're financially supporting this drunk. There are innocent children that could benefit from all the money that's been wasted on this guy.

I know this guy had some issues with his insurance running out and that should only serve as an even stronger reminder of how important it is to have health coverage - especially if you're going to ride a motorcycle. I know I've learned firsthand. My first wreck I shattered my clavicle and had extensive surgery to repair it. All-in, 3 days of essentially ICU at Texas Orthopedic Institute ran over $30K. Luckily that time I had insurance. Second time I was in for 2 days. All-in with cat scan and MRI it was about $13K - no surgeries or serious procedures. My insurance has just lapsed that time and I had to pay it out of pocket. (if you don't pay, the hospital WILL come after your house).

I always wonder about the "benefits" that people have in these kinds of cases. Doubtless they are great gestures, but I honestly think they're just that - gestures. Your first day in ICU averages over $10K and only falls to about $5K thereafter. How much is raised by friends and family selling BBQ plates and passin a hat? $1K-$2K I'd you're very lucky? You're gonna have to sell a LOAD of brisket to put a dent in the bill for a month in the hospital that could EASILY run you $150K!

Get insurance!

That's the least he could do for the tens of thousands of dollars of our money wasted (because of his stupidity) to take care of some dumbass that chose to not only drink, but ride a super high-performance machine to its top speed.

When Medicaid takes back his wheelchair, they can punch him in the nuts for me.

Shrek is one of the nicest guys I've met and remember when we didn't think he was going to make it. He has attended MH meets in the past, rode with him from HAK down to a meet inside the loop that Lanzer put on

Hearing it took a k9 to find him is what was so scary, the bike around and he was no where to be found

Glad he made it out alive.

A couple of my friends rode and partied with him and his folks. They've learned a lesson from this and it's good he is at the very least talking to kids. It would be nice to see him at MSF classes giving his story.

I drink, but there's no way in I'm getting on a bike on the streets of Houston with any alcohol in my system. Doing so is beyond stupid.

If someone wants to up their life, fine, but don't ask or expect me to clean it up.
