All,

Well, I certainly learned something. What confuses me: my buddy Ed (not on this forum and a long time rider) test rode a Diavel last summer. But, the dealer knows him extremely well. Also when I looked at some Harleys last summer, they offered a test ride on the spot.

I guess I need both Triumph and Ducati to have their big trucks come to town and give test rides. I saw where Kawasaki did that last summer, but I was out of town and I got an invite.

Thanks very much for your information. I keep learning from the fine folks on this forum.

I have test ridden two bikes at Polaris West. I test rode the Speed Triple and a Sprint GT. You can't test ride every bike there but they always have something Triumph that can be ridden when I have asked.

Wild West Honda let me test ride a used bike recently with no hassles, I just signed the waiver and got to ride.

Polaris sent a rider with me, WW let me go on my own.

I forgot, I test rode a V-Rod before too, Stubbs had a big banner out front offering test rides. But like I said, 90% of the time you're not getting on a sport bike for a test ride.

I did the Kawasaki test ride event. It was worth the wait IMO. I test rode the ZX-6 and 3 weeks later bought the ZX-6. The only other test ride I have done was the Buell 1125R and 1125CR when they were trying to give them away. Fun bike, but wasn't a fan of the engine dying when I pulled up to stop signs and stuff. LOL.

for the first 20 or so years I rode, test rides were not a problem... it seems like back in the mid 80's most dealerships quit allowing test rides... I remember the first time I looked at a bike and was told I could not ride it until I signed the papers... they said if I did not like it they would tear up the contract... I said "yeah sure" and walked out the door.. later that became standard proceedure...

I think a lot of it depends upon you, the buyer, and how you act.

22 years old, who thinks he has to have a literbike because 600's are for girls? Yeah - you're not test riding.

40-something, looking at high-end bikes and expressing concern over ergonomics and windshield height? Yeah - you'll probably be allowed to test ride whatever you want.

See how that works?

nope, profiling is not wrong, it is a good common sense practice...it works, and if it did not, it would not get done...but you are confusing the legal issues with racial profiling with something we all do everyday...

Uh, nope, and I had cash in hand, more than one bike, more than one dealership. Dealership isn't covered and doesn't want the liability on a sport bike test ride

At team mancuso off of 59, I got to test ride a used sport bike. I singed a paper and I did have cash, but they did not ask to hold it... They were very nice about it, and they asked me if I wanted to test ride, I just assumed you could not.

one of the guys over on the FJR forum took a new FJR out for a test ride and front end washed out on it while on a freeway off-ramp. He went through heck but was legally liable for the damages. Ended up working out a deal with the dealer to purchase the parts to fix it at cost AFTER he bought the bike.

But man, did he wring his hands for a while on that one.

I've never heard of any dealer allowing test rides. Only ones I've heard of are at 'test-ride events.' I'd bet that insurance to cover test rides would be pretty expensive and definitely not worth the dealer's money. People get so set on buying bikes (that they've probably never even sat on outside the dealer floor, much less ridden) that the bikes near sell themselves. Why shoulder all the risk of a test ride?

I bought my bike and plopped down a stack of cash for it and never rode a Hayabusa until mine was waiting for me outside in the parking lot.

Well, If you think you can test ride a new sport bike at a dealership that's not having a special event, let me know where and I'll take pics

All,

Good discussion, and I appreciate the sharing of experience and opinions. The bikes in question are the Triumph Street Triple R, Ducati 796 ABS and perhaps the Ducati 1100 EVO. The Triumph is my favorite based on looking, sitting, researching and talking to owners, it also has a price advantage. There are several in town at several dealers. The worst they can do is say no if I ask for a test ride.

On the other hand, there are definite liability issues for the rider also, so the common policies make sense and dealer judgement makes sense too. It must be tough selling these bikes, but as some said: they are pretty, pretty toys!! At Mancuso SW they started a STR for me to demo the engine sound...very unique, of course the Ducatis have their own sweet sounds....
