Question Question: legal releases, etc for dealer test rides?

All,

I am pondering test riding a couple new bikes this month in preparation to make a final decision. When I bought my used Kawa last March they would not let me test it since I had just gotten my M rating, fair enough, and I remain happy with the purchase.

So, what is the deal? What is in the fine print that they make a potential buyer sign? I would like to know before hand.

Dealers feel free to comment.

thanks!

^pretty much. Most dealership won't even let you test ride used sport bikes much less new ones. You might be able to test a used one if youve already negotiated the price, approved for financing, and pretty much sealed the deal.

I have test ridden a Honda VFR1200 automatic or whatever the it was, but that was by emailed invitation through Honda. You're not going to just walk in the door and head out on the road before you buy.

I've always heard you can test ride as long as you show up with cash in hand and let them hold it while you test ride it. But if you wreck, you just bought that

Yeah no. The'll just tell you to buy it.

Only time I've EVER seen a test ride was sponsored events about once a year from the Factory.

Yeah, if you hand the cash over first, sign the purchase agreement, you can wheelie that out the front door.

Besides the email from Honda on the VFR Automatic, I've never been able to test ride any new bike I've purchased, and believe me, I've tried, and on two occasions I paid cash in full.

I just went through this - no test rides for me either.

Probably your best bet is to borrow one from a friend to find out if you like it. What, exactly, is weighing on your mind? Riding position? Gearing?

If the 1100 Monster behaves anything like the 696 it is really labored below 3k rpm, has a narrow engagement on the clutch, hates cold weather, will numb your hands if you grip the bars too hard, and has a completely useless 6th gear. Also the comfort seat should be on as you leave the dealer. If it fits Pirelli Angel STs, you are in luck because they have good grip and last forever. You may also consider a 14t front sprocket because the gearing is really tall.

That is a shame, I bet they would get many more sales with some L-twin aural candy.

Yea, I know I'd want to buy a bike with a bunch of turns on the starter just to impress some boneheads that weren't serious about buying a bike in the first place.

You guys realize that most of the bikes on the show room floor don't even have a battery in them.

Thats how the fire dept likes it........

Now, I have had some customers that I have known for years, and yeah I have let them test ride sportbikes, but these are people I have known from the track, not someone walking in off of the street having no knowledge of their riding skills....
