Speed at time of crash?

How does the news know that a "motorcyclist was traveling at 100mph" when they rear ended a truck and killed themselves?

Is it based on a witnesses perception?

I remember one time, while coming home from the forest on 336, a buddy and I were doing about 70-80mph side by side. We stopped at the Shell at 45 and 336 and a Conroe police pulled in a said he got a report that we were "racing" on 336.

I can help but think if one of us had crashed and died that the newspaper would read, "motorcyclist killed while racing on loop 336"

I could be mistaken but when the police evaluate accidents, they can look at damage, how far someone slid, impact, witnesses (if you are going 80 and car or bike goes by you that is something you could probably judge). So a speed could be derived with a bit of info.

unfortunately because its a street bike, he was classified as speeding. The problem I have is if the guy was doing 100+, how did the car hit the guy and not have time to stop before hitting him. Unless the guy was going just as fast. im no rocket scientist, but something doesn't add up

"The news" always attributes those type of statements to police or witnesses.

Investigation into Fatal Traffic Accident at 12700 Northwest Freeway

December 14, 2011 - Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident in the 12700 block of the Northwest Freeway (U.S. Highway 290) about 2:25 a.m. today.

The male victim, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Arnold and Senior Police Officer R. Bymaster reported:

The victim was operating a yellow Suzuki motorcycle westbound on the Northwest Freeway near Pinemont at a high rate of speed when he struck the back of a black Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. The victim fell off the motorcycle and was struck by a maroon Chevrolet Impala. The victim died at the scene. No other persons were injured.

The investigation is continuing.

The rider hit the back of a truck first. That slowed him down to the speed of the truck

I know they can do that with skid marks and whatnot. Seems like a stretch to figure with a bike. I'm sure a motorcycle would virtually explode whether they were doing 70 or 120mph. Doubt they could measure the distance that a piece of plastic flew and calculate much.

it could be that the car was in a different lane and the rider flew into the cars lane. So the driver could be driving at a completely different speed than the rider was and was just at the wrong place at the wrong time

Unsafe for who? crashing at 30 mph is unsafe too...so, wouldn't it be unsafe to ride at 65mph (speed limit) on the highway??
