Thinking of something other than a couch with wheels...

Ok - so I'm toying with the idea of getting an inexpensive standard as a commuter rather than the half-ton behemoth I usually ride, and wanted some input from everyone.

Looking at a few options but keep coming back to the Yamaha FZ series - i just like that half-fairing.

Any comments from the peanut gallery on the FZ6 and/or FZ1 and why I should choose one over the other?

would all be great options. I dont think you really need anything bigger for a 600 (650) for commuting.

There's also the triumph street triple. Very comfy even on long rides, and still fun on spirited routes.

Thank you so much for your eloquent review. :P

I'm not looking to go rip up the track with this thing - just basic commuting.

Not a big fan of nekkids. Like having some fairing/windscreen. Motards arent my thing.

I like the looks of the SV and the Er for that matter but I just like more wind protection.

Yep - excellent bike - but same issue as a lot of others - no fairing.

Call me a wuss but I really like having something between me and the wind.

I am with this guy! I own an SV650 which I love. I want a motard really bad and my friends that ride the FZ6 swear by them.

I have an SV I am on the fence about letting go in good condition as well. Full fairing model but easy to rectify.

I had a first gen fz1. kick bike especially for commuting and weekend getaways. Get the big bike. , get a nicely sorted first gen for under 3500. BTW the first gen still has over 140hp just in case you feel like ripping it up.

Yeah - kinda also trying to stop gobbling fuel. The Road Toad, er Glide only gets in the low-mid 30s.

I thought it'd be much worse than it really was. I didn't really feel enough wind to want to tuck till 100, and it only does 130ish.

I will say, not being a full fairing bike was probably the reason my tank bag flew away on the beltway lol.

If I were in the market today I'd probably look at the Kawi Ninja 1000. It's a faired version of the z1000. Has gotten excellent reviews.

My old FZ6R was a nice commuter, but really lacked torque (not like my zx6 is much better lol).

Torque, you are probaly talking about when you get it up in the rev's.

Get a 1000 for the street. Nice to have that extra umph when you need it.

KLR650 or DR650? U can run over bums, crackheads and curbs......

I have a DRZ400SM and I love the feeling of going anywhere even when the pavement stops

A 650 thumper would work well as a commuter....
