Question Cheap track bike options

hey all . . . i've been riding a long time and a few months back i took my 09 zx6r to the track and just loved it, i'm not interested in riding street anymore . ..
however, i want to do trackdays on something cheaper, something that i wont feel bad about if it becomes a total loss (something around the 2k mark, i know i'm cheap , but i dont want anything expensive while i'm learning)

i was looking at 01 and 02 r6's, cbr's, sv 650's etc. . . can i go older than that safely? i've bought lots of newer used 600's, but what should i be looking for when i buy an older bike for the track?

are there any other options, like honda 919's . . . really would appreciate answers cause i'm totally confused . . .

Your budget is kind of low but, it can be done. If you want a track bike, December and January are the best months to get them, since racers are looking to sell their bikes to upgrade them with new bikes. Look for the deals, check the CMRA forums and also the Wera forums, you may get lucky there.

If it were me, I would be trying to double that money to make it 4k, which will get you way better bikes than the 2k you are willing to spend. With 4k, I believe you may be able to find a well prepped 06 bike.

I just picked up a clean 06 Kawi with no plastics for just over what you are looking to spend. Search the forums and Craigslist. Depends on how much work you want to put into it in some cases. Also dont be afraid to buy a wrecked bike, I would just make sure and get the frame and forks and such are all straight and then talk them down about being wrecked lol. Then go to 212Decals and get a killer deal on plastics and stickers. Have Tony Ta paint it and have a beautiful new looking track bike for not much!

sounds like a good deal, an 05 sv650 can be taken to the track without having to buy new springs and all right? i mean its a modern enough bike right? am sorry to ask that question, but have never ridden one before.

Yes any decent shop should be able to do it pretty quick and cheap if not free. Preferably a site sponsor

That depends on your weight and such. Im 250lbs and still ride stock on my bikes. not the smartest thing but it gets the job done. Just starting out you should be fine. Think alot of people end up switching out the front end for one off a GSXR though.

ninja 250- cheap as crashes well and slow as allows you to focus on corner speed and entry set up ... lots of parts available and good on gas/tires... the poor mans track bike... fun as too

You can pick up a well sorted 650 for 2500-3000. Ride it for an ENTIRE season. , go race it. Then "upgrade" to bigger bike. being able to catch and pass bigger bikes on a 650 is a blast

Plus, if you're on a budget the 650 will be much easier on your wallet when it comes to tires and such.

Buy a prepped bike. Stock SV suspension kind of sucks. actually, it really sucks.

Cheapest would be the 250, SV650 next. You can find a decent track bike sometimes for 3k already setup well enough.

Get something too crappy and all you'll learn is that you dont like riding .

If you want the best synthesis of cheap and a good track bike, then there is no other option than the sv650.

The bike itself is cheap, and there are parts galore.
