Popping noise on a '06 GXSR 750?

My nephew's Gixxer 750 makes a funny popping noise when you turn the key to the "on" position. It is an eletrical popping noise and coming from underneath the rear cowl. The fuel injection switch is on as well. Anyone know what this may be? I noticed the noise when we installed a license plate light. All the lights and signals work properly. I checked the fuses too. I haven't a clue what it may be.

Sounds like there's some bare wires shorting out or something is hooked up incorrectly

Patrick...maybe so but I only touched the stock license plate light. And I reversed the wiring to see if I crosswired the two. But still got the popping noise. All lighting and signals work fine though.

its a loose connection or a stripped wire open it up and check the wires and harness closely . my headlights started popping the other night and it turned out my harness was jacked up .

yah, it might be a wire grounded out and arking somewhere. do it at night and look for a spark.

Is it freom the rear cowl or somewhere under the tail section.
Check the simple things first:
Are the battery cables tight?
Are the cable going to the starter relay tight?
Are the wires going into the regualtor rectifier plug in good shape / not melted?
Is the regulator / rectifier still mounted? (don't laugh, I've seen them vibrate loose.)

Beyond that it's difficult to diagnose over the internet.
If you want, bring it by Tuesday when we reopen and I'll check it out real quick. No charge.

I was also told it may be a relay. The contacts may need to be cleaned or the relay replaced. It should be covered by the warranty. Bike is only a few monthes old without any mods.

wont be covered with the warrenty,u altered with the wiring, and they will say that is what caused the problem,so i would forget about that one,it may be all stock but you messed with it instead of taking it to a authorized dealer.well good luck on the problem.

It does have an exhaust valve and actuator motor.

We are gonna drop off the bike at the authorized dealer this weekend. The fuel injection light is coming on also. So we should find out the problem soon. I'll let you guys know the outcome! Thanks for everyone's input. Though I don't believe it is a bomb! .........lol
