I've owned hjc arai shoei scorpion, shark.. ect..

Best bang for the buck hands down is the scorpion. Only helmet that I've crash tested and I didnt even know I hit my head till 2 days later when I checked the helmet.. big chunk out of it and it did it's job great Im positive I would have been in the hospital without it and you can't beat the price.

That being said the more expensive you go you're paying for lighter weight and comfort.

i picked up my helmet at cycle gear about a year and a half ago. go try a bunch on and see what fits you. then find a suitable color/pattern. comfy helmet is less distracting when riding. a large shoei rf1000 they had on sale back then happened to fit my head pretty well.

could also try site sponsors (i dont think cycle gear is a sponsor).

People are going to be throwing a lot of brands out there for you. Although most of them will meet or exceed DOT standards. You're gonna want to maybe go to a few motorcycle gear stores and just start trying Brands/models of said brand on. Each helmet fits in a different way and since everyones head is shaped and sized differently, what may fit perfectly and be amazing for one person may not be so great for the other. My (shoei rf1100) fits perfectly for my head and i can't wear an arai and have it feel comofortable. My friend has an arai and cant fit into a shoei comfortable. Once you get a feel for a few helmets on your head, you'll know which one you're gonna want to go with. ( I didn't read through the thread so im sure someones already commented on this though.)

yup, i didn't mention that in my post above. i also tried on a few arai helmets, but they didn't fit my head evenly unlike the shoei, which feels snug all the way around (no high pressure areas when i put my lid on and the helmet isn't loose.)

First...figure out the shape of your head. Have someone take a picture of it from the top of necessary. Then measure the circumference of your head in centimeters, or measure in inches, divide by 3.14 and multiply by 2.54 to get the cm measurement. Helmets have different shapes, and some manufacturers offer a variety of shapes while others stick to only one....kind of their specialty, if you will. Once you get the above information, go here:

http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcyc...met-shapes.htm

This list is very accurate for the listed helmets. Only problem is that it's a little outdated, and a lot of the helmets (that I looked for, anyway) are on the clearance rack, but the replacement models for those helmets are available. The only inaccuracy I really saw on the list was the Shark RSX in the "slightly narrow" section. It was a user review, and I think he was mistaken, because the site editors listed the same helmet in either the "neutral" or "slightly round" section. C. Hern can verify, as he was selling one and says he has a round head.

Just remember how important helmet shape is. By measurement, I need a Large, but because of my narrow head shape, I cannot fit into most larges comfortably. If I put on an extra large, they fit front to back but leave way too much room on the sides of my head. A properly fitted helmet is safer, buffets less and is quieter. I ended up with a Shark RSF3 which is slightly narrow (good example of one manufacturer producing different shapes; see reference to C.Hern's helmet above).

Several people here have blurted out Arai. If you go that route, be aware that Arai offers several different shapes, as well.

Here's a brief summary of the link to helmet shapes. It is a general overview of shape by popular manufacturer.

Narrow--Arai Profile, Shark RSI (dc'd), Schuberth S1 (expensive, at Euro bike dealers)

Slightly Narrow-- Scorpion (almost all), Shoei X-11, Arai Vector (NOT Vector 2, which is more round), HJC CS-R1 (dc'd...clearanced for $60-70)

Neutral--Shoei (almost all), HJC (almost all) AGV (almost all) Arai Vector 2

Slightly Round--Suomy (almost all), Arai RX-Q and Corsair V

Medium Round--Shoei RF-1000 (can vouch for this...I have one)

Round--Some HJC's, Arai Quantum 2

Hope this helps.

Won't let me edit, but I got ahead of myself on this part....

Measure in inches, and divide by 3.14 to get your "hat size," as quite a few manufacturers provide that number in their sizing chart.

Multiply the circumference, in inches, by 2.54 to get the measurement in centimeters.

Go to the manufacturer's websites and check their sizing charts before you buy. A 60-61cm helmet may be an XL for one manufacturer but a L for another. If memory serves, KBC does this. 58-59cm for a M when most manufacturers size a M at 57-58cm. I looked at so many helmets before buying my Shark all the numbers kind of run together.
