Suzanne usually just has her hands on her legs, sometimes the tank if we're riding fast.
The only time she really needs to do anything else is if we're braking hard; she'll put her hands near my lower back to brace herself.

That's how I've always ridden with a passenger and how I've taught all of them.
IMO, if the passenger is laying all over me or using me to hold onto excessively, it affects my ability to ride.

Ed has a seriously good point.

You don't want to have the death of someone you drove to their death on your hands. Also make sure that the passenger has some gear on as well. Many times I see a passenger with only a helmet on and the guy riding the bike with a helmet, jacket and gloves on. When I rode, I always had a spare set of gear for my passenger. Many times we rode in full racing leathers!

I learned to ride with a passenger quite well. I have ridden 2 up and lead many rides for the TSBA. I would routinely drag knees with a passenger on the back. I even passed someone that thought that I was riding too slow. It was in a corner that I showed him with my knee on the ground that he was the one riding slow. After that the rider decided that it was best to just stay in line and not pass the leader. Ahhh the fond memories...

I teach them to hold on to the tank, dont lean on me, dont move around till both my feet are on the ground and if at any point you need me to slow down just tap my right leg. My current girl is getting the hang of it. My X was a pro miss riding with her cause it didnt feel like i had anyone on the back.
