I am not saying that a 250 isn't a better idea for a first bike but in defense of the OP. The Ninja 650R is the Kawasaki competitor to the SV650. I chose the SV because it was enough power to grow into but not so much that I got bored. In retrospect I wish I had started on a 250 but I don't regret my SV and think it is a great starter bike. That being the Kawasaki is very comparable in power and torque and I would assume is a great starter as well. That was my politically sound answer..

Now for my expected plug for the SV:

If you want to buy a Ninja 650R do yourself a favor and buy an SV650s

I like my 650r way better than my friends sv. Both are our first bikes. It's all fitment and preference. I did put some lower bars on mine. Stock was too high.... But that was only $60.

Honestly, I like the 650R. I love my SV650s ...and I can't think of another direct competitor except the 650R I gotta root for mine. However.... SV is out of production so the Ninja has the whole stage.

If you are a person seriously looking for a first bike you should talk to someone who has ridden several different bikes and has had enough experience on each one that they can make a recommendation, based from their experience and how it applies to your stature and type of riding you intend to do, etc, etc, of what type of bike you should "start" looking at.

My 1st bike was a GS500F, that got old quick, then I got an FZ6R, was looking to just get a 600 SS(CBR, GSX-R, R6), found my 954. Starter bike is whatever you are comfortable with.

Well, I was thinking of combination of factors including price, power, etc.
If bike is legit, the price is great - no questions.
Power - substantially less then any 600 R bike, but enought to keep you moving
(flame suite on - I don't believe in 250 bike thing, 250 could be fun on the track, but for public road - don't waste your money)
Torque - these little twins (SV and Ninja) are delivering great torque through entire revs range which in my opinion is great for the noob who not always sure in what gear he/she should tackle the corner. Both these bikes are very forgiving in this regard.. Yes, my personal preference could be v-twin instead of parallel twin, but also I like the looks of the ninja better.
All in all great starter bike, versatile and multipurpose, enough power to feel comfortable on hi ways, forgiving handling. Then rider can decide if he/she wants to move to real sport bike or not...
My 2c worth

LMAO! My friend just bought this bike like 3 days ago. I had to drive it back for him because he hasn't ridden much. Crazy coincidence. My first 10 minutes on this site and and I see this.
