Welcome.. As far as what you were looking at, find a friend that knows what to look for.. Or use your import knowledge.. i.e. leaks and what not to see if it's a good bike. If so, ride it.. Many will give you a hard time for what ever you ride, but in the long run will be happy you're riding. So find what ever is in your budget that you like and f*in ride.

welcome

sv650, ninja 650r, ninja500, and fz6 are good starter bikes as well

I see a lot of cheap ninja 500 if your looking for a 500cc instead.

If you are not wanting a 250, which is a great bike. Id look into the SV650 or the Ninja 650r. Both have many upgrades you can do and make it your own creation. I like both bikes and have seen them tricked out looking pretty sweet...

Take your MSF class. You have to take it to get your license anyway.

You'll ride a 250 out there probably.
See how comfortable you are on that first. Then think about actually doubling or tripling the amount of CCs from that bike.

Don't let your ego write a check your body can't cash.
Remember, its your FIRST motorcycle, not necessarily your last.
