FU@K AUTOZONE, never buying parts from them again

Had some free time today so I decided to do the annual "seafoam" treatment on our cars.
Of course in today's cars w all the electronics it is expected that you will get a check engine light when doing it, usually a misfire, when you unplug a vacuum, or when pouring the seafoam, or when you wait 10 minutes before you restart the engine as seafoam may have dripped from the intake through some open valves to the top of some pistons.
As expected both cars got the check engine light, no big deal.
I head to Autozone to reset them.
He says you got multiple codes.
I said I expect some misfires cause I just used seafoam that I just bought from you.
He says yep, random misfires.
I say, i know, can you reset the light please.
He says Nope!
I say why not, just click "clear codes" on your screen
He said only an authorized mechanic can do that, I can't do it.
I said OK give it to me i'll do it. (I'm better than most autorized mechanics i'm thinking )
He says Nope, it's the law. (and he walks in to print a list of things I may need to buy to fix my "problem")
Dude, you selling the scanner tool right next to you, I tell him.
Yep, $129.99 he says
That means that I can buy it and reset it. So there can't be a law about it
He says, You can buy it and do it, I can not do it for you or hand you our scanner.

, so you want me to buy it and return it in 60 seconds for a full refund? stick the list you printed w the codes up your
Long story short, drove next block to Advance auto parts and got the codes cleared.
Are people that stupid anymore (ok maybe he was as he asked me what kind of car it was with the steering wheel roundel emblem in-front of him) or do they really not care to help others anymore?
No more Autozone money coming out of my pocket. If you are not going to be as helpful as you advertise, YOU!

I don't think there's a law about prohibiting them fools from erasing the codes.

It sounds more like a ruse to make people buy parts, unneeded in most cases.

Hence my dislike for Vatozone when it comes to that.

sounds like a inside scam... the managers probably told them not to do it in hopes of them spending more money...

Dont get upset about it. This all started because a little while ago somebody sued and won because an employee reset some codes for a customer and the ecu went out down the road. Advance in my town wont do it either, but will let you do it yourself by lending the scanner.

This is true! Everything now is about liability and protecting yourself from being sued

Unless they threw their back out or they are simply that good with parts... why would a certified mechanic or whatever work selling parts when they could make so much more over hourly wage?

I ask cuz I walk in with my shop foreman shirt and a rondell on it too and get asked a million questions as to why I chose this over that etc etc. Usually its a matter of preference(such as the seafoam.)

Not knocking them at all but if you need help again, and on the northside, I'll do it for you within a few seconds. I'll even let you press the button

I see nothing wrong with the autozone employee in this situation. If the seafoam is causing a misfire then it is the wrong stuff to used or not following the direction correctly, IMO.

Not sure if I agree with that. I bought some of their generic brake cleaner the other weekend to clean some brake rotors I was about to install and it stripped all the paint off of the inside portion, which sucked! I had to repaint them all and it was a pain in the .

I call BS on that. Please show me the article ........ he wouldn't let me do it myself.
So what's next? Best buy getting rid of geek squad because a hard drive seized a day after they cleaned up all the ?
Plus he already tapped into my ECU to check the codes, can't he be sued for that? oh wait that could translate into $$$$'s for him. A "clear codes" would not

Thanks ! I may take you up on that. Or order a model specific scanner from china for $35 I got a VAG-COM i use occasionally, but that won't work on this car. Can you also program stuff, lock unlock options...etc?

Really? Assuming you understand how an internal combustion engine and sensors work and how "seafoam" tries to work, I do not understand your statement.

Autozone is the worst parts place. I drive 2x as far for anything else. I'm even leery to purchase chemicals that are also sold at other parts stores. Can't trust them or their parts.

Autozone blows. At least three parts I've tried to get from them for my car have been wrong...as in, the computer says "it's this number," and the parts don't match at all. O'Reilly, Advance Auto or BapGeon FTW.

yeah man, stay away from that dump.if you buy brake pads or light bulbs from them, it is common practice for them to sneek either brake caliper lube or bulb grease in your bag or box of pads and charge you for the without your knowledge. they think its ok to steal a few dollars from alot of people and if u catch them they can just give u your money back. when they pulled that on me i asked the manager if i stole 5 bucks out of his register and he happened to catch me can i just give it back? i asked him what the difference is as what they are doing is pure theft. of course he tried to make excuses and weisel out of the conversation. i was so mad i really wanted to unleash my anger upon him.since then i have seen the same thing happen to many people. so i looked online and found that it happens everywhere everyday. i will never buy thier cheap they are peddling ever again. AUTOZONE!!!

Dont know if anyone has said it, but disconnect the battery and hit the brakes= resets ECU/clears codes. Save a trip to "Vatozone"!
They prob dont want to clear the codes for vehicles trying to get a state inspection.....
