He should have worn a helmet.

I hit a dog at about 75 on fm1725...

So the story goes... I was trying to enjoy my nippy early morning ride today, all was great. I had it all planned out... I would ride till 12pm eat and ride some more until work at 6pm. Was supposed to be my day. About 45min into the ride Im going down fm1725 and I was exiting a cute little curve going 75ish when I see this saber tooth tiger laying down in the grass. As soon as he sees me he gets up and runs towards me (I think he was hungry and tried to eat me). Then I hit his head with my front wheel and I nearly ate it (the asphalt). I stopped to check out the damage to my bike and the saber tooth, and it turns out the saber tooth was just a cute puppy! So I stopped my ride early and now I'm sad.

Damage to bike: Burnt blood stuff on pipes and crack lower fairing.
Damage to puppy: Severe instadeath head trauma

It all happened so fast my reactions where instinct... I feel really guilty because I treated the dog like 2x4 on the road. I slowed down as much as I possibly could and when I realized a collision was imminent I gunned it abit to get some weight of my front wheel.

Be careful out there guys!!! Dogs seem to think we are toys! Stay frosty out there when you are riding, especially with them pesky deer. Hitting a 30lb dog is one thing but hitting is 150lb deer with horns is a whole different story.

Also my steeltoe boots prolly saved me some hurt. The dog hit my right foot as it ricocheted off my bike. Wear good riding gear, and if you're a low income rider like me at least get the bear minimum. Helmet, gloves, jacket, and some good boots or don't ride at all.

It was a humbling experience... likes to come at you when you don't expect it. I was worried about trucks crossing the double yellow, not some dog trying to pounce on me... It's my first real close call. I'm usually very aware of my surroundings and try to ride safe within my comfort zone but to be honest I never really considered something like hitting a dog. The thought didn't even cross my mind once. I still have a loooooonnng way to go in the learning department it seems.

I'm thinking, I need to reevaluate how I ride... Even the little tries to kill you

I took the pic to show the owner. I went to the nearest house on a farm to see if they owned the dog, but nobody was home... Today sucks.

Better now then when it gets older. I got hit by a dog about 60 lbs, and the bike slid about 45 feet with it underneath. Dog lived and left his nice little glands on my bike, left it all nice and smelly. He worked his way out and hauled home.

I saw the dog the other day as I came home one day from a ride, it saw me and took off down the sidewalk. I caught up to it and it crouched like a scared little kitten against a fence.

The same thing happened to me except it was my ex wife. She was slithering along came out of the grass full tilt and tried to rip into my nads. All she got hold of was my savings account. It hurt a little, but like you I just gunned it and cracked her in the skull with the front tire, but it had nothing to do with taking weight off. I intentionally wanted to apply another order of magnitude of force and try and break off her horns. She's no puppy. She's a vicious pirranha pittbull sabertoogh grizzly (only fatter) blood sucking bottom feeder low life mother puss bucket.
So if you see her make SURE you have on your helmet and for 's sake - GET A CUP.

Don't feel guilty. He made a mistake and paid for it. If you had reacted differently, you probably would have hit him anyway but gotten yourself hurt.
Sometimes life is hard, but it was you or him. It would be foolish to risk yourself to save a dog.

Poor puppy, but lucky you. Could have been worse. Think of it as a suicide.
