Lightbulb Ride to the Tail of the Dragon

I am contemplating a trip out to the Tail of the Dragon maybe next year or the following if I get done with school in time. I am considering riding the trusty 250 aaaaaallllll the way there and back. I think it's less 1000 miles from Houston and would probably take a good day or two to get there. I was wondering if anyone had any tips, experiences, comments they would like to share to prep for this awesomeness of a ride

Lot's of fun! just don't ride during the weekend bc the cops are really really really really BAD. Get a buddy and trailer up there instead of riding IMO.

+1 on the trailer, also the weekday riding. I was there end of may beginning of june this year and it was not even remotely busy during the week, and dead early in the morning. Saw one cop the entire week there. It was just after a big rally, and it was perfect timing. Will be going the same time next year.

One thing I am especially happy about is that I never saw a drop of rain while I was there.

1) Leave your ego at home. Especially if you've never ridden in terrain like that. Lots of people get very hurt out there. Riding massive twisties like those will fatigue you and wear you out faster than you realize. And it is constant out there.

2) Tail of Dragon is great and all, but don't get wrapped up in just doing the Dragon. Tons and tons of fantastic riding out there. Highway 28 going from Franklin NC to US 129. Cherehola Skyway. 74 (I think thats the number...don't recall which state). If you don't mind riding a bit further, head over towards NC/SC - 178 between 11 in SC and 64 in NC. Once you hit 64, make a left, go 1/4 mile and take a right onto 215 and run that up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Eh, it. Just pick a direction and go. You won't be disappointed. Just make sure your GPS is charged.

3) Might I recommend the Franklin Inn in Franklin NC. VERY motorcycle friendly. VFRD does at least one ride out of there every year (if not two or three). I think for this next year we have the whole hotel booked for the whole weekend sometime in May. Franklin is kind of BFE, but its very central to excellent riding. The Dragon is a little over an hour away. Convienent to roads in SC, TN, and GA if you so desire.

4) If you hit the Cherohola, when you get dumped out in Tellico Plains TN, look for a restaurant called the "Telli Cafe". Order the Spicy Green Tomato and Country Ham soup. You can thank me later.

5) See #1 again.

6) Have fun and enjoy yourself. The roads will be there any time you want to go back to them. If you aren't used to it, try to keep your loop to about 150-200 miles. It doesn't sound like much, but your speeds aren't real high and you aren't traveling in anything resembling a straight line.

im planning on riding there next spring, and try and get my parents to ride down from maine. if i ride out there, im going to take three days to ride there, and just enjoy it....instead of hauling to get there in two. Worst case ill trailer the bike up to my buddies place near huntsville, al, and ride over from there.

The fog was pretty cool early in the morning. It wasn't very bad while I was there though. The weather could not have been better, I'm really hoping for the same thing next year.

Magicman and Dannyboy were there in the snow some time ago. I don't imagine that was too incredibly enjoyable.

Trailer, it's 16 hrs straight driving.
We do a trip every year, and started staying in Fontana village. You can rent a room in the hotel or cabins.

Plan on at least 5 days of riding to hit all the good roads, 220-250 miles per day.
