you're more likely to die if you wear a lid.

In Texas the odds are ~3:1 against your statement.

Table 6 can be misleading. Sure Texas has the highest number, but it's not accounting for per population rate.

So really it's:
Texas - 393 deaths per 24,782,302 people (2009 popn)
Florida - 386 deaths per 18,537,969 people (2009 popn)

So Florida has it worse.

By helmet states do you mean those that require the use of a helmet? If so the last chart does indicate it as designated by an asterisk next to the states name.

Just goes to show ya that alcohol dulls the senses and makes one stupid.

I may catch for this but my guess is that there's a pretty strong correlation between the type of rider who wears a helmet and who drinks and rides.

The cruiser guys hopping from bar to bar seem to wear helmets far less often than the sportbike guys. And the sportbike guys don't seem to be as guilty of bar hopping.

there is some truth to that, but this report is lacking.....

old guys die drinking and riding, but young guys die being stupid but in other ways.

i think this says alot

Motorcyclist Fatalities by Engine Size(cc), 2000 and 2009

Year
Engine Displacement
Up to 500...... 501–1,000...... 1,001–1,500...... Other/Unknown...... Total
2000 203.........1,261.............1,092............... .....341...............2,897
2009 257.........1,662..............1,489.............. ....1,054.............4,462

since most sport bikes are 600cc to 1000, and cruisers 1000+

I'm pretty surprised at the statistics in PR. When I visit, I see nothing but squids. I don't think I've ever seen someone wearing gear, maybe a helmet or two here and there.

I wonder how many of the guys who died with lids on were blasting down the highway or city streets on a brand new bike at 100+ MPH. Most of the guys Ive seen without helmets tend to stay under 40 on their Harleys and stay FAR away from roads with curves.

This doesn't really take into account the number of bikes of each category. Are there more 1000+ CC bikes out there than 501-1000?

Just looked again at the last chart. The states with higher percentage of fatalities with riders who wore helmets are almost always the states that require lids. That's just common sense. If you are forcing everyone to wear a helmet then the people who die will be wearing a helmet. If on the other hand the state doesn't force people to wear a helmet then the percentage will depend on the relative stupidity of that states population.

For example. North Dakota: 100% of those fatalities were of people without helmets. Yup. All 3 of em. That had to of decimated North Dakota's population of like 50 people.
