Only you will know when you are confident enough to move up. You have to have respect for the the machine. Not many people on here and most will agree that you will not ride that 250 to its full potential. Most cant do it... Just know you are the one in control of a bigger bike, if you dont have enough discipline and respect for a bigger bike then it is not time. Read the RIP threads.

I technically started riding this May. I did the MSF and got my license. Before that I had always been around my friends' bikes. I'd ride them around the block, in parking lots and what not. Anyway, I started on a GS500F. I rode that for about 2-3 months then I rode an FZ6R. Rode that for about 2 months, now I have a CBR 954. Do I think I'm an expert rider? No, but I think I am proficient enough to not exceed my limits. I never thought I'd get a liter bike....but I'm glad I did.

Actually, it is a good question. I am pondering an upgrade from my Kawa EX500. My short list are sport or sport touring bikes, with ABS, and adjustable suspensions. My Kawa has plenty of power, good handling, decent brakes and I doubt I will ever fulfill the potential of the bike. My short list right now: no order: BMW F 800 ST, Ducati 796 or 1000 Monster with ABS, perhaps the Triumph Street Triple R (but it does not have ABS--ugh). Kawasaki just released a new 2012 Ninja 650, two cylinder, and it does offer ABS, so I may check it out. My riding style is moving from around and about neighborhoods and secondary roads to longer faster rides with less stops and lights and traffic. I have been out on the freeways more also, and longer distances intrigue me (100 miles+, each way). Thoughts?

Solracer has done many a 2-3 day Hill Country ride on his 500 Ninja. He keeps up just fine.

move UP to a 600? did you start on a 250 and get bored really fast? a lot of ppl will say to start on a 250, but even my MSF instructor didn't recommend it; he said to start with a 500.

i would say you're ready man.
