I need a gun!!

I know there's been 1000x threads about guns and all that extra , but i never took the time to read any of them. Last thursday my dad was robbed @ gun point in front of our doorstep at 2am. We live in a very rich and gated community in houston so its not soemthing to expect walking from your car to your front door. Today i was just mugged at around UT campus in austin. They didnt get from cause they weren't really well armed and i fought them off till they ran away.

Basically, with the sudden increase of crime in Texas i decided i need something to protect the ppl and things that matter to me. So i need a gun and i will wnat to carry with me almost anywhere i go. So where do i start?

First off take the CHL class. Then get a pistol thats easy to conceal. Perferably at least a 9mm. Its going to take at least 60 days to get your chl from DPS. But you can start by getting a pistol.

true that on the "take a cc course".
also, remember when buying a gun, you need to leave the "dirty harry" mindset at home. purchase something that you can comfortably carry at ALL times. Your new .50 cal is gonna help you a lot sitting in a dresser at home when your getting mugged elsewhere.
I recommend the kel-Tec line up of guns ( www.kel-tec.com ), American made, poly carbonate frames = ultralight everyday carry weight. Affordable to purchase and ammo is reasonable enough that you can get plenty of range/practice time in. The .32 and .380 are awesome little pocket guns and if loaded appropriately, can sit someone down in an instant. They have a new thin 9 mil out now, hard to find, but starting to pop up as they release more, its a single stack 9 and I'm picking one of those up next.

I need to send it off to get novac sights put on. Only thing stopping me is that it is a 1962 model in perfect condition. I really don't want to change it but it needs it.

Dude, welcome to life. I'm sorry to hear you and your dad were robbed. Crime has always been here its just finally gotten to you. Actually things are better now, the homicide rate in the late 70's early 80's was around 800 per year. Now we're lucky to get 375. A pretty big decrease. You said you got jacked at UT, and everyone is saying to get a CHL, but you need to see what the CHL rules are as they relate to colleges and universities. If you do go the CHL route, don't stop there. Once you get a gun take a good training class and learn how to use it in a defensive situation. Going to the range and firing a few rounds doesn't count as training, it just proves that your gun is functioning.

Practice drawing from concealment, learn how to use cover and/or concealment, learn how to shoot on the move, and just generally know the capabilities of your weapon. Lets say you go for a mousegun like a kel-tec, once you go past ten feet shooting under stress your groups will open up big time. Not to mention smaller calibers will have a harder time piercing clothing and jackets and such. I too own a kel-tec .380 and do understand it's a "get off me" gun. Press it to his chest, fire a few founds, then run like . My preferred carry is a full size glock or 1911 in .45 acp. A not much harder to conceal but if I shoot, I feel more confident that he's going down for the count. I agree with the CHL, but it only allows you too carry your guns on you and there are still restriction on where you can carry. But a CHL class is not a gunfighting school and is not a replacement for proper training.

+1

I have a Kimber 45 and that friggin thing is ACCURATE! Me and a friend of mine were firing 18" groupings from 100yds w/ open sights. It was on a sand bag rest, but nevertheless accurate pistol. I love the trigger action of 1911's too...

Also, 45 ACP is the way to go.
