Bike(s):
2012 RC8R

ZX-10R or R1

If you were shopping for a new bike, which one would you buy and why ?

2010 Kawasaki ZX10R (or) 2010 Yamaha R1?

Just want to know your thoughts.

One would think since I have an R1, that's what I would go with. But the new R1's are ugly IMHO....I'd have to go with the 2010 Kawasaki ZX10R....that's one sweet looking bike.

Out of the 2010s I'd go with the R1 but out of the 2011s I'd say ZX10....

I rode a 2011 zx10 at the kawasaki ticket to ride, loved it. I haven't ridden an R1 so I can't comment on that but I do like the look of the R1.

Since I've owned them both in numerous forms. I'll chime in.

If you are looking at a 4000-5000$ bike, I'd go with a Gen I zx10r all day long.
If you are looking at spending <10,000$ the newer R1s are a much nicer choice.
If you are looking at a BRAND NEW 2011 model. The GenIV ZX10R is one of the best bikes manufactured period, and beats the R1 hands down.

Plus I just saw in SportRider that they got an extra 15HP out of it with just an ECU reflash

Both are fast and looks great. Both have different ride or feel. Test ride before you buy.

i rode a new r1 with the crossplane motor
felt rough in the lower rpms. like an inline 4 with a miss.
i bet re-assembly time would be a nightmare if it was ever rebuilt. like their valve setup. on metric cycles website he tells of a 60 hour re-assembly. and thats a few years ago.
get a zx10

Totally different bikes. You have to ride each to decide. I personally dont like the R1s cross plane crank setup. I bleed green, anyway. My opinion is obviously ZX10, but you need to see which one feels right for you.

I have a 10 r1 and love the bike. If i had it to do over again I would have waited for the 11 zx-10 or bought a 1198S
