Not saying what he did was right, but sometimes people that hit and run are scared for their lives. The man felt enough guilt to turn himself in (maybe fear of the consequence for running), but that's better than a lot of people that that don't.

Yea, he turned himself in after cops tracked the truck to the trucking company and started asking questions.

The driver also stopped and dragged the bike to the side of the road before fleeing

The fine doesn't go to the victim's family, it goes to the state. If the victim's family wants recompense they will seek it through a civil suit.

This is a prime of example of why our hit and run laws need to be fixed.
IMO there needs to be a differentiation if you hit and run a motorcyclist, even if he's not injured, along with an increase in penalty if he's injured or killed.
I would propose something along the lines of:

Hit and run no injury: 5 years mandatory minimum.
Hit and run injury: 10-15 years mandatory.
Hit and run death: Minimum 20 years up to life if driving while impaired is involved.

Currently the law is as such:

Leaving the scene of an accident involving death or serious injury is a third-degree felony, punishable by 2 to 10 years in a state prison. If the injury is not serious, it is a felony punishable by up to one year in a county jail or up to five years in a state prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000.

Hit and run involving damage to an occupied vehicle is a Class C misdemeanor with a fine of up to $500 if the damage to all vehicles is less than $200, and it is a Class B misdemeanor, up to six months in a county jail, if the damage is more than $200.

Most cases wind up with the offender on probation.

Where are you getting that from? The cops used video to trace the truck back to the company he works for.

And up to 10 years for fleeing like that...unbelievable.

Did any of you read the comments at the end? Somebody said something like "well he has 8 kids, he shouldnt be riding anyways." WTF? Then tried to say maybe the driver didnt realize he hit someone since the motorcycle was 40 ft from the guy.....because i see random motorcycles ghost riding down the road all the time.......
