Some LED Mods.

I'm starting a little project in a few weeks once all the parts arrive from China. I'll be adding somewhere between 50 to 75 RGB LED's to my KLR650E. So while I am waiting I decided to do a little practice since I haven't fiddled with soldering or wiring in about a year now.

The result is below (now being called my "green gills" by my friends).

So when this project is finished I will have a bike that can produce a light show in all the colors of the rainbow for a total cost of less than $50. And it would be half that if I had bothered to program my own micro-controller.

Have any of you guys done any LED mods to your bikes or gear?

I wanted to put underglow on my bike. I looked at the various kits and couldn't justify the cost.

I did a little research and for less than 60.00 I have over 300+ leds for my bike.

I am still in the process of putting each pod together, but once I layed everything out, I was putting a 5 count 8mm pod together in a little over ten minutes. It has everything wired up ready to go.

I looked at some of the high power stuff, but didn't want to spend the dough.

Ace electronics on Antoine has a good selection of leds as well as drivers and micro controllers, and they are fairly reasonable priced wise.

I just wired up a 3-led strip to my bike last night for the plate light since the original light wasnt put back in when the previous owner installed the fender eliminator. The LEDs came in a roll of 3 all pre-soldered, ready to go. The strip can be cut in sections of 3 LEDs. I like these better because they are small squares that solder in vs the traditional "bulb" looking ones that are larger and take more space. I'll post pics later.

Try riding with the red lights on at night.

I don't feel like digging it up in the transportation code, but it boils down to:

Headlights must be white
Running lights can be yellow to amber
Front signals can be white, yellow or amber
Taillights can be red or amber
Rear signals can be red, yellow or amber
Rear license plate light can be white

Anything else is no bueno.
