I think you'd have more of a distinction in who does or doesn't wear a helmet based upon what type of bike they ride. i.e. sport bike vs cruiser.

i was telling my professor that's the driving point - what kind of bike and how it's ridden. but the main argument he was making was regarding age, so I'm trying to find some stats in that arena. and i figure this is probably a skewed sample because this forum has it's own culture and it seems to be pretty safety conscious. still thought i'd give it a shot.

it was worth a shot. your are correct about this forum and it's "safety" conscious. (for the most part). although everyone has their own opinion on whether or not helmets should be law or not.

Go Coogs! You at main or downtown? I'm at main campus.

While I'd say skewed for sure, you could also compare answers from this site to say a Harley forums. Or maybe twtex.com since they seem to have a broader mix of people.

I don't think it should be required by law, some people don't want to wear them, fine. It's not going to change my values and understanding that I'm protecting MYSELF by wearing gear. Now I did like the insurance aspect of it that someone suggested in another thread. If you go down without the proper gear the insurance company can decide weather or not you are guilty of negligence and choose to cover your error or not.

TRUTH.

I'm 32 and wear all safety gear, because it's the intelligent thing to do if you enjoy life.

I don't think it should be required by law.

Agreed,

I'm 23 years young, and I too wear all the gear all the time.

Older guys- 45 plus Ride mostly harleys (cruisers) and are more than likely NOT gonna wear gear...

23 and under guys- Mor than likely crotchrocket and will own a helmet just not wear it.

The ones that fall in the middle are going to have the higher percentage of helmet wearing both on Sport and cruiser, but mostly the sports...

That has been my observation..

I am 61 and I wear all the gear....
I also ride harleys and dirt bikes...
most of the folks I know who do not wear helmets, including the two friends of mine that got killed this year are folks who ride harleys....

Try posting your survey on survey monkey and providing the link here. Every forum will be skewed based on the focus of the forum so your sample data isn't really random. I would suggest doing the same intro on several different motorcycle related forums (i.e sportbike specific, dual sport riders, touring, HD crowd, etc). You'll will get a larger population of varied riders for your sample.

I don't know if this is an informal survey or you're conducting actual research. If you're serious then these are issues that should be addressed in your methodology. Also do some research on the NHTSA web site to see what had studies have been done previously about helmet use.
