Which Roads Do You Avoid ??

With so many accident threads popping up now-a-days, constant traffic and construction being a constant hassle, I thought it may be good for people to share which roads in Houston they consider dangerous and tend to avoid when riding. I have always believed that prior knowledge of the road you're riding is a huge step to keep you out of trouble, but I think there are several that pose too many risks and I avoid them whenever I can.

Here goes:

- Highway 6 / FM 1960 - pretty much the entire road has too many access points and intersections for stupid people to come from and hit me. My only accident (in a car) was on Highway 6 just North of 529. I was rear ended while stopped at a light.

- Westheimer - show-offs, drunk & people on cell phones... enough said.

- Highway 290 - between 610 & Beltway 8 - the way this highway was designed causes too much merging on the main lanes and people changing lanes without looking twice.

I'm sure there are more I can't think of. Honestly I don't like riding anywhere in Houston anymore and keep it all to backroads and track... too many close calls and idiots out there.

I've actually witnessed a collision on Westheimer - I was like hey watch that chick in the 4 ton SUV hit that E-Class and it happened!
When you actually see an accident happen it shows how frequent it is.

Richmond has the same drivers and lots of really uneven lanes.

I10 by federal and uvalde, etc.
feeder roads, plenty of illegal drivers, and a mix of bad truckers

downtown/midtown in general
people run red lights constantly
and out-of-towners are lost and making sudden changes in direction.

I should have included Richmond. I consider it the same as Westheimer for the same reasons.

I spend a lot of time on Westheimer. Don't really have that much of a problem with it. Maybe because I'm always around the Montrose area.

The only road a actively try to avoid is 45 where it meets 59 and 288. Its a constant traffic jam there.

Kirby by 59. The road was already a little crazy, and now construction has jacked it up.

I agree. Just the other day a guy changed lanes into my lane. Only problem is my lane was traveling in the opposite direction. He wasn't even turning. He thought an east bound lane was in fact a west bound lane. Closest call I've had in a long time. I swerved and he clipped the car behind me.

+1 on 1960. 24/7 meat grinder. I also try and avoid the intersection of Louetta and krackendahll going north or south in front of the Kroger. Every tom and harry wants to turn left out of there with no right-of-way. There's always a wreck.

Hillcroft north of 59 gets me...uneven, lots of erratic drivers and it feeds into Westheimer. I would go to church on sundays that way, but so far have avoided it. Agree totally on Hwy 6: off my list entirely.

Don't care much for Hwy 6 and Westheimer. I tend to be alert while riding, but on those roads I'm super alert.

Try westheimer between 610 and BW8 at anytime day or night and it will change your mind quick. Unfortunately I live there and think the traffic there is 99% of the reason I hate Houston.

I-45 between BW8 and Nasa. Normally not too bad, but with the construction and altered lanes people keep going straight when the lanes turn. Usually on cell phones too. Bastards.

Add in 45S from 59(downtown) to BW8. I don't even drive that streach in my car. I'd rather just pay the tolls and have a nice trip.
