I used to live in the Willowbrook area working for HP/Compaq for 9 years. It was great for many years but started to get flaky recently (in my group) due to all the cost cutting and moving work to Mexico. However, I was not going to leave for any other job that came along. I had a 2 mile commute a nice 2200 Sq ft house in Tomball that we paid $118K for 7 years ago. My wife contracted for HP and drove less than 5 miles to work. Life was good. I started looking and opend my search to include Austin. I was offered about a 20% pay increase to come here to Austin. We had a hard time deciding to sell the house and uproot and move. The house we bought here was 1900 sq ft for $200K And we got a bargain! :BangHead: . So in the short term, my wife and I will probably have less disposable income, however, as we've been here and endured the change, I know we made the right move. It's tough to do when you have a good situation. You always think the grass will be greener on the other side. So, I would do what you can do to base your decision (mostly) on other things besides salary.

Here's a few things to consider:

-- 401K is huge. 3% contributions from a company over time can turn into huge dividends when you retire. A few extra thousand invested now turns into 500K later...

-- Work environment: are you dependent on freedoms that you have at your current job? I know I am. I can take off whenever i want, take a long lunch, come in early to leave early, etc. & other stuff like that

-- Health insurance 100% covered by the company is rare these days, especially w/ increasing health costs

-- Small companies can be really bad about a few things:
* over-working their employees (I have a sister-in-law that works for a small company owned by an a-hole, but he's boss, so what he says goes, know what I mean?)
* do they have an official job-grade system (ie- pay scales to ensure fairness)
* documented promotion plans and career paths, etc.
* can be stingy about time off & stuff

-- Commute: gas & tolls add up throughout the year. An extra toll to and from work and gas can add a few thousand in expenses every year.

None of this is earth shattering, but something to consider...

Good luck w/ your choice...

I currently use Autodesk Land Desktop 2002 and 2006. We use 2002 here in the LD dept. as its capabilities are more than enough for what we do, but we are slowly moving forward to 2006.

the real question is what is everyone's favorite FEA package. ABAQUS rocks!!!!!

Nothing like a good non-linear contact FEA to start my day
