New to the forums and riding!

Hello everyone,

I've been lurking on here for some time, registered a few days ago and figured I would post. Seems like there's lots of helpful people here, and a good way to find people to ride with n share a new (for me) hobby with.

I have little experience on two wheels but have wanted to ride since I was 16. It's 12 years later and it looks like I finally have the time, resources and independence to do it finally hah. The only time I rode a bike was when I was in college, at UT Austin. A girl I was good friends with rode what she called an Interceptor. Now that I've been researching bikes, n some of the history of the sport lines from pictures and model year I think it was a VFR750F, a 96 or 97. She had an older bike, and knew I wanted to ride. I didn't know much about bikes so I though an older bike would be weaker and a good place to start - little did I know that a classic sport bike is still 95% of the performance of today's bikes... she put me on a 87 FZR750R - which I was planning to buy off her because I thought it was an absolutely beautiful old school sport bike... I don't have a picture of it, but it looked exactly like this one except the red decals were blue http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/mod...zr750%2087.htm

It scared the s$&*#& out of me. That thing sounded mean and rode like a raging bull.

I figured if old bikes were like this, newer ones must be even harder to ride. I was missing a lot of motorcycling concepts back then, like gear, and displacement, etc.. I'm glad I didn't buy it either. When I got a tune up estimate for it I didn't realize how much maintenance was involved in cleaning and adjusting that genesis head.

Anyways it's years later now and I still want to ride. I'm quite positive I'll be getting a used ninja 250 or maybe a new cbr250r. Although for a first bike later on, I think I don't want to go the sport bike route.. standards seem more practical and just as fun as an adult now. Sport bikes are cool, but I don't want one as an ONLY bike. I need something more versatile and city-oriented. But in the mean time I'll get a small 250 and worry about that later.

I plan on registering for an Awesome Cycles class in early september, and between now and then plan on buying a full set of armor and versatile gear since I'm still a poor graduate student and want something I can use year round.

Anyhow, great place you guys have here and I look forward to riding soon enough. I'm gonna go to the gear forum and look for gear-specific help.

Gotta be some UT alumni in here no?

Other things I enjoy, if anyone shares the interests, are guns, and anything technology related. I'm an accountant and IT Services contractor by day. Lazy man by night.

A quick addition... did any of you guys who DON'T have disability through your workplace buy third party disability insurance?

Thank you! Is there just one edit allowed per post for newly registered users or something? It let me edit it once, but I tried to again and either it disappeared or I can't find the edit button anymore...

Don't buy any gear before class. We'll give you ideals about what to look for and a bunch of coupons for that kind of stuff.

Welcome to MH!

but you require boots and gloves for the class right? My girl wants to take the class but doesn't have boots or full-fingered gloves. Should she buy some just for the class?

Yeah I don't own anything that could be considered appropriate footwear. Nothing above the ankle. And I have mechanics gloves? And I still have my helmet from years ago. Brand freakin new worn like twice. just aged in a box.
