EBC Extreme Pro Brake Pads | Review

Back when I first started doing track days I used to run EBC's top of the line pad, Extreme Pro. I never had an issue with the pads. I suffered from a bit of fade, on occasion, when it was super hot (95+ degrees) and I was at a heavy braking track, like Eagles Canyon. Somewhere along the way I let someone talk me into trying a set of Vesrah RJLXX pads. The argument was the pads had better initial bite and that they would last a really long time.

I am comparing the two sets, because they are competitors. If you doubt that, from then Vesrah page they show EBC as their competitor.

A quick search shows the Vesrah RJL XX pads listed at $234.95 for a set, shipped.

The same search shows the EBC Extreme Pros listed at $149.96 for set, shipped.

Both a friend and I tried the set at the same time (we both were previously on Extreme Pros) and agreed that the stopping power, fade, initial bite, was no better than what we had previously experienced. We both run a few seconds under 1:50 at TWS (Texas World Speedway) and a few seconds under 1:40 at MSRH... I'd like to think this was a real test of the pads performance.

When expressing my opinion to some Vesrah fans I'd run into the longevity argument. Nevermind that one search shows the Vesrahs at nearly $100 higher than the EBC, "they'll last twice as long!" they say.

I think I could do a race season, including track days, on (2) sets of Vesrahs. A year would included 30 sprint races and probably 30 track days.

What prompted this thread was because this evening I decided to change my EBC pads. Not because my brakes didn't feel good but because It had been so long since I changed them. Sometimes, I'll change things based around time, rather than use or life left. (oil, front tire, pads, chain, etc) I changed them before the first race at MSRH, in February. Since that day I have done 8 sprint races and 8 track days. I removed the pads and found them to be in this condition, pictured next to the brand new pad.

I have no doubt that I could have done 7 more sprints and 7 more track days, which would equal 1/2 of a season for me, on these pads.

In conclusion, I am going to need (2) sets of pads, regardless of how long they last. I think I'll put the $200.00 I'll save by using EBC's in my pocket.

I didn't really pay attention to that. I can say that I have NEVER "worn out" a rotor. I've crashed and bent a few, but never worn one out.
