03 Yamaha 250 2-smoker

Thinking about trying my hand at dirt every now and then. Ive got this bike up here at work just sitting and might can get it cheap...

I know nothing about 2 strokes or DB in general. What should I look out for?

what should I pay for this (its the owners son's who never rides it anymore)

Ill take pictures later, but it has faded blue plastics

Look for busted fork seals/ oil on the fork tubes. Check out the sprocket's condition. If you can, take off the seat (2 bolts) and see how clean the air filter is. You should (generally speaking) clean your air filter after every ride. If there is a dirty filter in there and dirt airbox surrounding the filter, odds are the owner doesn't take very good care of his bike and might not change the oil very often either (which should be at least every 4 rides at most for someone who doesn't race).

Check the compression. A 250 2-stroke shouldn't be butter to kick over. Check for overall cleanliness. Dents or dings in the first 10 inches or so of the pipe can hurt the engine performance a little bit. Not much, but i'd offer less if i saw those dings.

With title, in good overall condition i could see paying around $1,800. Without title, and needing a little tlc but runs, i wouldn't pay more than $1,500 at most.

You can find great deals on CL all day long for 250 2 strokes in good condition in the price range FWIW.

An '03 YZ250 is a great bike. Can't really go wrong if you get a good deal.

excellent bike for motocross, woods riding, jumping, going fast, general racing. Very fast bike and quality made. Cant go wrong with anything you want to do IMO.

i can't really think of anything it would be bad for except for teaching a 90 year old grandma to ride for the first time..

I think Kdog pretty much summed it up there. The other thing is that 2 cycles are very simple to work on, and if you can learn to ride that bike without killing yourself on the powerband, then you can ride ANYTHING period, busa, 450f, anything!

funny guy. Chris, I have a 250 2 stroke that will provide way more power than you can handle for 900 bucks.

FWIW, my wife paid 2k for my 05 yz250 (alum. frame vs. the steel) and it has suspension goodies up front, very low hours and super clean (Also came with a stock Wiseco piston for when I go do the top end). Apparently it was too much for me my first time out.

That is a lot of bike for you Chris. I'd get something a bit easier to ride for a first dirt bike.

03 yz250 put a muthafuckin scar on my face! no joke, and i'm a seasoned dirt rider, if you can keep it in second and third around a motocross track you'll be flying.. i took mine out to the national forest a couple of times and almost ended up in the treetops finally ended up going down hard at splendora mx track. all i have to say is it's a sick bike and not very forgiving, but it's fast and the powerband is smooth until it's too late

get it dude. you will be fine.

I don't pay more than $1500 for a used 2-stroke or $2000 for a used 4. That's only my personal limitations.

if i still have a spare bike (and I pretty much always do) when I go to the forest again, I will let you know...you can taste the powa of the 426.

Chris, when do you want to go? I will even show you how to clean his air filter and change his oil. All the great tastes of owning a bike without owning it.

Heads up for anyone reading....Texas OHV sticker for 2012 will be available August 26th.

Dbuck's bike is a great bike that I couldn't keep up with...to me, that sounds like a heck of a bargain.

dirt bikes can be scary fast bro...and a 250 two stroke is VERY touchy on the throttle...Seriously, feel free to come take mine for a ride through the woods with CLiff. You'll enjoy it...and then when you get back with that huge smile fork over the 900 bucks.

I was kidding about the waiver!

Ive ridden a few 2 strokes and know a little bit about the power band. Of course they were only 85's and 125's not 250's... Honestly, I dont care about speed, Id rather have a 4 stroke that was reliable and easy to maintain. Off road IS something Id like to look at getting into tho.

I'd look more into the xr or ttr line up of 4 stroke trail bikes then.
