Medical insurance is important regardless of whether you ride a bike, drive a car, or just sit on your couch. I can't leave my current job (which I despise) because the insurance package is just TOO GOOD and I have an existing condition.

Back to Eric - Did anyone meet with his mother and brother yet? Where are they staying? Does Lily need anything?

Alrova- the doc will let us know when it will be good to have visitors. right now he won't know who you are or even what your there for. as soon as things start coming together is when he said it would be a good time. but it will take a little while....:eh:

ICU is about 5K-8K a day. I know, I was in there for almost 2 months. My crash bills were in upwards of 1M. Thank for my great insurance. It still cost me a pretty penny though. The Rural Air lift was $9,400!

There isn't enough money to collect to help him if he doesn't have insurance. They say that you are actually better off in a major accident to not have insurance. The top reason for people claiming bankruptcy is due to an accident when they had insurance.

Medical Bills Leading Cause of Bankruptcy, Harvard Study Finds

February 3, 2005
Illness and medical bills caused half of the 1,458,000 personal bankruptcies in 2001, according to a study published by the journal Health Affairs.

Senate Passes MBNA's Bankruptcy Bill
Congress Ready to Tighten Bankruptcy Law
Medical Bills Leading Cause of Bankruptcy, Harvard Study Finds

The study estimates that medical bankruptcies affect about 2 million Americans annually -- counting debtors and their dependents, including about 700,000 children.

Surprisingly, most of those bankrupted by illness had health insurance. More than three-quarters were insured at the start of the bankrupting illness. However, 38 percent had lost coverage at least temporarily by the time they filed for bankruptcy.

Most of the medical bankruptcy filers were middle class; 56 percent owned a home and the same number had attended college. In many cases, illness forced breadwinners to take time off from work -- losing income and job-based health insurance precisely when families needed it most.

Families in bankruptcy suffered many privations -- 30 percent had a utility cut off and 61 percent went without needed medical care.

The research, carried out jointly by researchers at Harvard Law School and Harvard Medical School, is the first in-depth study of medical causes of bankruptcy. With the cooperation of bankruptcy judges in five Federal districts (in California, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas) they administered questionnaires to bankruptcy filers and reviewed their court records.

Dr. David Himmelstein, the lead author of the study and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard commented: "Unless you're Bill Gates you're just one serious illness away from bankruptcy. Most of the medically bankrupt were average Americans who happened to get sick."

Today's health insurance policies -- with high deductibles, co-pays, and many exclusions -- offer little protection during a serious illness. Uncovered medical bills averaged $13,460 for those with private insurance at the start of their illness. People with cancer had average medical debts of $35,878.

"The paradox is that the costliest health system in the world performs so poorly. We waste one-third of every health care dollar on insurance bureaucracy and profits while two million people go bankrupt annually and we leave 45 million uninsured" said Dr. Quentin Young, national coordinator of Physicians for a National Health Program.

"With national health insurance ('Medicare for All'), we could provide comprehensive, lifelong coverage to all Americans for the same amount we are spending now and end the cruelty of ruining families financially when they get sick."

Very sad, I had a couple of thousand in bills just from my little incident at TWS (Texas World Speedway) last September. Crazy!

My medical bills, if it wasn't for insurance, would run upwards of $60k a year. Did I mention I can never leave this job...

Any updates? I know there isn't much to tell, but I feel helpless.

I just got back from the hospital. I talked with his brother and his uncle. They are supposed to move him to a regular room tonight sometime around 5:00p. After that, he should be able to have visitors. The doctors told them that visitors would be good for him. It would keep him sharp if there were people to talk with.

I don't think a group visit would be in order yet but having a few people a day would be good. Someone should talk with Lily and find out when and how many would be best. She wasn't there when I was. She had come back into town to get some things and then head back.

Since he was still in ICU, I didn't get to see him. They told me he didn't remember the accident but it sounded like he knew who people were. According to his brother, he kept asking for is "favorite pillow" so it sounds like he is speaking but still really doped up. I didn't push too hard for info since the family was looking a little tired.
