Tail of the Dragon. Last minuet decision.

I decided to go to Deals Gap on a whim. It went from a hill country ride seeing family to a big ride out east. Getting packed up tonight. I know it's too soon to ask anyone to go with me. Just wanted everyone to know in case I run into anyone out there. Pictures will be posted later.

I am heading that way at the end of September. Taking a southern route first through NO and Destin FL then north.

Hope you have a safe trip!

Wow. 7 days of camping and living off the back of the bike was the best therapy eva!!!!!! 2403.3 miles after it was all said and done. I wish I would have had more time, but have to get back to work sometime. Got sick with some kind of bug right after I got back. Good thing it didn't happen on the ride. That would have sucked.

I will post up some pics when I get the chance to download them.

What campgrounds did you stay at? Route from Houston? Attractions you'd recommend? I bet that was an awesome trip.

I stayed at State Parks along the way. They are typically cheaper than KOA's by $10 to $13. I would do a search on my phone when I decided to start looking for a place to stay.

I went I-10 to I-12 to I-59 most of the way. Taking the major interstates was the fastest way to get there. I was limited on time so I would have taken a more direct route if I could have. I went to Barber Motorsports Museum on the way and went to the National Naval Aviation Museum on the way back. I have to say I enjoyed the Naval Museum more than the Motorcycle Museum. Too much to see in both places. Went hiking in the Smokies and I must say that was the highlight of the trip. Very peaceful and tranquil.

Doing it in the next couple of months would probably be best. I went during the hottest time of the summer. Heat will take a little out of you. Just made sure that I was always hydrated and didn't have much problem.

I've been asking my friends to go for years now...no one every really got it together except me and back then I didn't want to go alone.

I may head there with some BMW CCA people if I do not go alone.

I've always been sort of a loner and I really enjoyed going it solo. Needed some time to think and not have to worry about anyone else.

+1
That's the way i did my Colo trip last fall. Solo gives you time to think and no compromises on what happens next.
Sounds like a great trip!
I been to both museums too. I preferred the Barber but the Naval was awesome as well.

Been there in June and end of Aug.. definately much better in late Aug/Sept compared to the heat and crowds of summer.

I did have to contend with the heat. On the second day I was dealing with a 105 heat index. I was fully geared up the entire time. I found the trick was to soak my t-shirt at gas stops and rest areas along with a balaclava I was wearing around my neck. I closed all the vents on my helmet and jacket to minimize evaporation and it worked real well. Felt like I had air conditioning kind of. Plus I always made sure my Camel Bak was always full.
