A few novice questions from a novice fan

Ok I just started watching sportbike racing about a month ago. And I have a couple of questions. What size engine is Moto GP? And what's the difference between Superbike and Moto GP?

Moto GP = 990 CC. the difference between motoGP and usperbike? Superbike is a stock motorcycle with modifications, motoGP are basically one off bikes, they share nothing with a productiion bike.

MotoGP = 990cc this year.. 800cc starting in 2k7

MotoGP = Protype one-off type machines

Superbikes are highly tuned production bikes you can buy at the dealer.

i think up to 990 cc, but next season to 800 cc.

difference is that superbike are modified versions of bikes that are available to the public, motogp bikes are not produced for public consumption...but imagine if they were...(they'd probably overheat)

Yeah it's crazy it's like I turned on the speed channel one day and was like Woooooooow this is what I've been missing.:confused2 My fiance looks at me with disgust and I don't seem to mind. If I'm not riding, I'm watching.

another question is Moto GP the equivalent of Formula one because they're one off's? And are the best teams usually the ones with the most money that in turn yields better technology?

well, yes, kinda, the powerhouses (Honda, yamaha, etc,) most of the time have the lates and greates because they have a bigger R&D and more money. I feel the time of the small players is gone for good.

I will definitely be there, thanks for the invite.

Why are they switching to 800cc next year?

Yep.. MotoGP is where the new technology is being developed. Not all of it will end up in production bikes, but some of it does.

TIP: Don't limit yourself to just the MotoGP class. There are some EXCELLENT races in the 250 and 125 classes as well.

I definitely want to get to the track eventually but I need to get my skills up to par. I've only been riding for 3 months. But I'm a quick learner so hopefully soon.

Because 990cc bike has too much power.
The bike's so powerful, tires can't even keep up with it.
Though they are lowering to 800cc, overall speed won't be that different (also the bike will be slightly lighter).
Their corner speed might be even faster.

Slow 'em down a bit, but that won't last long. I think I've seen a few bikes at 330+kmh this year. 200mph = 320

I think the fuel tank capacit is being reduced as well. So they not only have to make as much power as possible, they have to try to do it a bit more efficiently as well.

Yeah the superbike racing has been great. That's actually what initially got me hooked. Do I need help? I just stopped my lecture, popped in a movie for my students to watch, all so I could get this info.
