get a truck for now and save for a trailer and bike. i'd further recommend you get a small 4 cyl truck like an older ranger and shoot for a good older bike. something around a 2000 can be had for not a whole lot. buy in the winter. i'm usually browsing cl like joe dirt and auto trader and right now people want a lot for their bikes. gas does cost a lot, and it is the so called "riding season" but they will just want to get rid of it in the winter. buy then. as for mom and her worries, try and comfort her by getting her involved. see if she'll do the msf class with you. maybe she'll help with the cost of gear. demonstrate to her that you will be/are a safe rider. my parents and inlaws both were against me ever having a bike, but they also had commented positively on the fact that i was riding as safely as i could control. i always wore gear and pretty much obeyed the speed limit and traffic laws/general safe riding. i have friends that ride like a bat out of , but not me. im in it for the fun and relaxation, not a race to the grave.
there are things you cant control though like other drivers/ riders, wreckless idiots. texters, etc. people wont see you on the road and try to run into you. bad road conditions- POTHOLES- and weather. it might rain while you are at work and the roads are slick when you go home, or you might get caught in the rain at night. that usually sucks.
but still, let them all see that you are doing your part to stay safe and informed.
it is a tough battle to win, but if you do congrats to you and dont let your parents see you actin' a fool out there.
good luck.

The truck will last a long time and you can drive it winter, summer, fall, spring, you can carry anything you want and tow things, if you want to move you're covered, taking people out is much easier, etc.

Me:
Mom... It's not a motorcycle.

I'm winning, right guys?
dude get a truck... a female aint gonna wanna ride on the bike allllllllll the time.. you wont either ...yeah the first 3 weeks will be fun but sometimes you just NEED a 4 wheel vehicle.. why not get a lil bullshit car and get a badass bike .

There's no way around it, bro. Mothers worry, no matter the age. I'm turning 40 in January and my mother hates that I still ride "those dangerous death machines".

Don't finance a bike. The insurance will eat you alive.

Your Mom is right...get a vehicle of your own first, then a bike. Get a simple 4 or 6 cyl truck, use it as backup once you get a bike, then get a cheap bike to work out the kinks on, then go big later on a nice bike.

I am happy with my $1500 toyota tundra 200k mile work truck, it gets my bikes to the track and back and keeps me dry and cool. Sure, I can afford a $500 payment on a new 4 door bad truck, but then my fun budget for track days and bikes gets eaten into and "the boss" sees my spending habits and wants to go big as well. I got a new Kia Soul as my daily, mainly cause if I spent $1 more than I did on her new Jetta, she'd be , LOL.

Cheap bikes are always available with a little patience. Take your time looking.

Dude you need to think LONG and hard about what you are doing here. Take it from me. I used a motorcycle as a DD for more years then I would like to admit. At that point motorcycling is no longer fun but a chore. Also do you really think youre going to save money? Yes MAYBE on gas. But tires dont come cheap and either does service. Oh you think youll be able to do the service? HA wait............ something ALWAYS will go wrong sooner or later with a bike. Finance a bike with no previous credit history? Good luck. Bikes are considered luxury items........... they wont want to finance you. Get a truck............ save the cash................ buy a USED bike out right. Your 18............ dont start making mistakes already. Youll have plenty of time for that.

Get the 1998 4cyl.
I have the same one and it has 196k on it and counting. No problems at all. I paid way less than they are asking though.

You're allowed whatever you want to get. Just make sure you can afford it. The bike is for pleasure.

Dave does not allow purchase of the bike. 4-wheeled vehicle must come first.

Dave simply will not budge on this topic.

get the newer ranger. then you can haul the bike around or anything else. Then when you move stuff for other people you can have them pitch in for gas
