I ride everyday from Hockley to Downtown, about 65 miles round trip. Use the HOV lane to miss most of the traffic. No different than riding anywhere else in town. Don't expect it to be like a forest run and you'll enjoy it.
Negatives are: You'll get hot sometimes, or wet, or whatever. Wear appropriate gear for conditions or ride only on the good days, it's up to you.
Positives are: You miss the fat guy sitting next you on the bus, that you paid $8 or more to ride. You miss the pain in the of trying to find car pools and dealing with whiny .
Just my humble opinion.

How many of you responding, commute to the galleria during rush hour or have done that commute for any serious period?

ya im gonna disagree with that one. nothing beats chillin in the a/c when its 100 degrees outside, sippin on some coffee, smokin' my cig and listening to Michael Berry on the AM with no wind interference. even in bad traffic, im happy as a camper.

If you like to ride and are comfortable with your skills. Commuting should be no problem.

Not the same...

I done 45n to downtown
Blt 8 to westheimer
45n-blt 8 to i10-dairy ashford (or just 45-i10 to same)
45n-610-san felipe
45n-59s-kirby

Of those all, the most irritating was san felipe. End of the day meant getting on
The feeder, going south to the light, making a u turn, going north on the feeder to the on ramp. Two lanes of cars on a single lane ramp onto 610... the craziness seems to escsalate as the proximity to the galleria itself increases.

Almost 20 years across those routes... in rush hour. It's a thing for those younger or more suicidal than myself. Theres something seriously wrong when a distance of 30-40 miles can easily take 2-4 times as long to traverse.

Honestly, the best to do is try it and decide for yourself.

Yeah, I wouldn't do that. A coworker commuted from 45N and Richie. He did it every day for a year. Now he lives by me, we ride in together, he loves the ride in now.

I ride every day 81 miles round trip Pasadena to BW8 and 290. As said earlier in the thread the worse day on a bike is 100 times better than the best day in a cage.

Commuted between the Gallerear and IAH between 2001 to 2007 with the last 1.5 years 50/50 bike/cage. Outbound to IAH in the mornings was a breeze at 6am. Coming back at 4:30 pm was a pain sometimes, but I bailed at 610 and Woodway, so it wasn't as bad as it can be further South or later in the day.

The bike definitely had the advantage of flowing through the parking lots that develop, but you have to be extremely aware of the idiots around you and respect the fact that looking at the vehicles around them is not as important as their angry birds game they're playing on their iphone. Ride like you're about to be run over at any minute.

I ended up moving closer to work.

I ride all year rain or shine. It takes me about an hour to get to work and my round trip is just over 90 miles. It's right at 100 when I go to school at UH. It's a fairly easy ride if I take the back way out of Huffman, through New Caney to 59. If I go through Atascocita on 1960 it's quicker, but not as enjoyable. The HOV on 59 is great. I've been do that ride for about 4 years. Depending on the time of day, traffic in Galleria is going to be worse than 59.

Lately I've been driving a bit more and I've noticed that it makes my leisure rides more enjoyable because I haven't already been on the bike 2 hours a day through the week. I miss being on the bike every time I drive though.

I have never had a problem in morning traffic and I take 59 everyday, and have for the past five plus years.

He speaks the troof. I have seen him.

I get on the HOV just north of Humble (the beginning) and get off at school. If I'm leaving after 8, I usually stay on the main lanes, because the asshats on the HOV go slower, and just me off. I commute about 70 miles round trip, but I don't go to the galleria. I went to that area one morning before class (in my car) and I got hit at the merge on 610, so I can't say what I would do if I were on the bike. Ride for a week, and see how you like it.

I ride from west side i10 to almost downtown most every day. Only exceptions are if its raining or the bike is down for some reason.

You should ride it a few times and see if you like it. The only thing I miss when I ride home in the summer is the a/c.

i commute daily given it is not raining and or freezing. the ride is 27 miles one way. the reason i enjoy commuting on the bike is because i go into the office at six am and get off at three every day. No traffic and the risk seems low especially compared to rush hour. If I worked an 9-5 I'd probably be caging it to avoid the traffic/heat and risk of idiots.

I ride at least 3 days a week from 45/Rayford to Sugarland, so about 100miles roundtrip. Not too bad, and have only gotten really screwed 1 time, in the 45N HOV lane there was a fatal accident and the cops wouldn't let us pass it and we were too far up from the last exit to go upstream. Waited over an hour to go
