Question Honda 50 Transmission replacement..

So my cousin's '05 Honda 50 has been giving him some trouble the past 3 times he's ridden it. He says that when shifting from neutral to first it almost doesn't go into gear. "It then makes a rattling noise then slams into gear all the sudden". He says it also has trouble shifting from 2nd into first. Each time he rides it he says it gets harder and harder to get it into gear and the only issues are involving first gear. 2nd and 3rd gear have no issues.

This is the first time i've heard a problem like this on a Honda 50. I told him the drain the oil and check for any metal materials/ shavings. His oil still looks perfectly fine. I also told him not to ride the bike anymore until we get it fixed.

Today he will be pulling the cluch cover just to get a visual.

Based on what i can gather, the problem seems isolated to the tranny. Specifically first gear. Does anyone know what the problem could be here?

I figured, as a last resort, we can drop a fresh 4 speed tranny in there or another stock used tranny off of ebay. I've never split the cases on one of these 50s before. Is it easy to replace the tranny in these things? We would need a low cost fix so a used tranny off of ebay and doing it ourselves is what will likely happen. Need some input

sounds like the gear or linkage is in bad shape, I've never been in the case but I have seen alot of photos and it looks to be one of the simplest transmissions Ive seen. I dont think it would be to hard to replace the parts yourself, but like I said I have never done it, so it could be more complicated then I believe. Surely Chad has some insight into this. Anyluck on planetminis?

i have not yet been able to get my hands on it and see for myself but i will be adjusting the clutch before i try pulling everything apart to make sure it's nothing to do with the clutch.

My clutch was out of adjustment and the shift lever was bent and it made for a of a shift, but it never felt like it was slipping gears or not engaging when released. Does he know how to ride them?

Adjust the clutch and then go from there. The clutch is driven off the shift lever. So if it way off shifting can be almost impossible.

Will do.

How difficult is it to split the cases and change things out worst case scenario?

Theres a lot of little things that have to be done/oriented correctly inside the cases. If you dont know what you are doing, I wouldn't suggest getting into it yourself, especially if you are looking for the cause of the problem. Theres a lot of stuff that you may very easily overlook. My gut says you have a clutch not disengaging, this causing hard shifting and grinding. It'll be more obvious in lower gears, or when there is a big speed difference between input and output shaft speeds.
