Thinking of opening used motorcycle gear shop.

Recently me and my brother have been talking about opening a small store for buying and selling used motorcycle gear, very similar to platos closet but for protective gear of course. Before we invest any of our money I thought I would ask the motorcycle community what your thoughts on this would be? Would you buy someone elses used gear that you didn't know given it was in good/acceptable condition and priced accordingly? Why or why wouldnt you? If we follow through with this business venture we would only carry helmets, gloves, boots, jackets, pants, and suits, back protectors as well. There is risk with every new business but It doesn't hurt to ask the opinion of the community you would be serving Thanks.

I have zero interest in used gear...but you might be able to make it work!

Thanks I forgot to mention we would only carry popular brands such as

Alpinestars
Dainese
Icon
Shoei
Arai
ect.

Generally gear that is expensive brand new that offer excellent protection. None of the knock off non name brands

lots of people buy used gear, only thing you have to think about is used gear tends to smell, so you would either have to get it dry cleaned or washed up or your shop would end up pretty stinky.

PLEASE do your homework. If you could talk to the manager or owner of a Plato's closet and see what their margins are it might work.

I know I have a ton of older, usable gear that I would be more then happy to trade towards the purchase of nicer gear.

It works with video games, furniture and clothes I don't see why it wouldn't
work with gear.

Good Luck and kudo's.

I buy used jackets all the time from e-bay. But that might not be a good thing, e-bay has every thing... But it would be nice to have a place where I could see it first hand.

You will not need much space and do not sign a lease that is to long, just incase it didn't work out.

Ebay is probably forever going to kill your business but if you can make a market with new riders or people who are strapped for cash after buying a bike that'd be good.

I know plenty of people who blow their money on the bike and forget gear.

Plus you will have to spend some money on getting the gear cleaned. I sweat like a in my leathers so I know that'd suck to clean.

Honestly, you could do it in your garage if you wanted. Have set hours, advertize by bussiness card at meet and greets, bike shop bulliten boards, CL, etc....

The first thing you'd need is start up capital to buy inventory and time to get to it...

Some people have a problem with used anything, most do not if the condition and
price are right.

Poor people like me dont have a problem with used gear - reasonably priced - and decent condition.

Not helmets though...

Great suggestion on the home business set up, you don't really need a store during a start up. I would also consider consignment deals. That way you could get much more inventory without the capex.

Get a website set up, tax ID, and you're good to go.

fwiw all helmets have some sort of "born on date" on a tag inside the helmet. I believe 7 years is the max life.

My initial thought (and probably mentioned above) is used clothes. Washed whenever warn (for the most part). Traded in and then dry cleaned. Gear.. Sweated in often, even if ever/rarely washed. I've bought used gear when I got started, because you're right, it's expensive. But say buying a one piece is like buying a used pair of underwear. I can see maybe gloves... Maybe boots.. A jacket... but the high end stuff someone would want to find at a second hand store would be something different.

Now all that to say, trying to invest in say a store front, probably not, but getting a small storage space and running an Ebay/Craigslist 'store', probably more profitable and probable. I mean where do you go when you're looking for used gear....

Hey thanks a lot guys for the info. I have commercial property and space so overhead wouldn't be a big issue. I'm familiar with all the necessary steps to making your business legit as most of my family runs small businesses. I don't know of any shops locally that buy and sell gear. I would like for customers to be able to browse through a selection to see what they would want to buy. Thanks again for the feedback much appreciated.

I'm looking for size 48 one pieces. XL gauntlet gloves. Size 8 1/2 boots. Shoot me a PM if you have anything in stock. A little rash is okay. I'm looking for cheap but quality.

Look at the post quoted below... He is the same as I... Although I see your point - some just want the best protection at half the cost... I have bought a used 1pc already but have not really worn it - and used full underarmor to try it on.

My knee/shin guards, leather gauntlets, 1st helmet, 2 jackets are all used. In fact, the only new gear I have are a pair of gloves and 2 helmets - one I won at xmas raffle. This is partially because I'm a cheap . Is there a downside to this? probably so.

I may try to find anti-bacterial spray or something and treat the inside now that you mentioned it bacteria/sweat and the like...
