Austin's F1 Track Approved by City Council

Not sure if you guys were paying attention to this stuff or not, but there were a lot of people opposed to Austin's new F1 track...emissions, loudness, funding...etc.

Nevermind the fact that the money is coming from an already established fund specifically set aside for 'major events' like this track. And the track is next to a landfill and an airport, so what the decibel level on the track has to do with anything it still lost on me.

Anyway, it passed through the city council with a vote of 5-2, so it seems like it's 100% good to go now.

So...I'm ready for my first track day at a F1 track.

They should have built it closer to here than Austin so they wouldn't have to deal with so much granola grinding and tree humping.

I think the main opposition came from a couple of ladies. Basically they were opposing for that money to go to the track and go to the education fund instead. Unfortunately, due to the way that the budget is set up, that was not possible.

Anyway, I am glad we will have F1 on 2012 and MotoGP on 2013. Hopefully some AMA & World SBK Rounds as well.

i'm glad the track is less then 25 minutes from my place, but i do agree with the ladies on the educations aspect. i have had some friends here in austin lose their jobs because of funding. And now they just cut another 4 billion in budget cuts for education. So i can see the fight, BUT i'm excited because it's a new track so close that will hold a bunch of trackday events for bikes and cars!

If we do track days there, then wouldn't that count as "learning" and if you are learning something, someone has to "teach" you....so, just think of it as an establishment of higher education!!! Lol...cant wait to go back to school!

Very cool! best post on the website-

Wait….2 more events per year at COTA ? Won’t that mean more tax dollars coming our way ? Even more success for the COTA facility ? Has anybody told the City Council about this ? Need to put a stop to this right now before it gets completely out of hand.

You just sit there in Houston and mind your smog.

I am going to be a short drive from MotoGP, HAHA.

I think the estimated $300M ANNUAL revenue would help the area and more than offset some of the education cuts those woman are crying about. Then again, those teachers could always get a job at the track....teaching....

I think council member Riley was correct in his answer for the women on the council who were uncomfortable with opening up the funds for the track, he basically said in order to help out issues in the city (education, teacher lay offs) Austin has to make itself economically stable (bring in more money!) Financially there will be no risk for the city, just pure revenue for the next 20 years.

Austin is the perfect city to hold international events!

Better the money goes to the track than wasted in our broken education system. The ammount of money being spent in the education system isn't matching the results.
