How loose is too loose? Chain question.

I have about 2 1/4" of play on my chain and I want to ride with some buddies tonight but I don't have the tools to adjust it just now. I don't see it coming off the chain but I am not an expert. Is that too much or should I be fine? I know 1-1 1/2" is recommended.

Any info would help thanks.

It varies from bike to bike. If you check the manual it will usually tell you how much. Mine actually calls for ~ 2 inches according to the manual.

1-1/4"- 1-1/2" are a good range. 2" or more is too much.

Just adjust it it will only take a few minutes.
Check if it is loser in one area than another if so adjust and measure were it has least slack, (Is tightest) then start looking for a new chain.

I wouldnt ride too much on that much slack. I rode from Cali to Tx one time and didnt pay attention to the slack in the chain. well the chain started skipping over the teeth of the rear sprocket and eventually bent/wore the teeth down. I got stuck out in the Hill country over nite on the side of the road(next to Buckhorn Ranch).
