Didn't Go Down.... But Freakin CLOSE!!!

So I was riding out FM1093 between Fulshear and Simonton Saturday morning with some buds and noted an oncoming funeral procession headed my way. I pulled over to the right hand side of my lane and signaled the riders behind me to ride single file. Lead cop in procession decided he wanted me out in the grass apparently as there wasn't a paved shoulder so he came fully down the middle of my lane pointing to my right. I grabbed a handfull of front brake right as the front tire hit a 'tar snake'. Felt the front tire begin to slide out from under me and an impending 'low side' in my future. Got off of the brake, planted my left foot hard and managed to stay up and rolling. THAT HURT!!! Rode on down to Vincek's BBQ and once off of bike could not put weight on left leg. Rode on home and called better half to come take me to the Methodist Hospital E Room. Six x-rays and three cat scans later I'm told the knee is fractured and the ankle also has some damage.
Admitting clerk tells me motorcycles are dangerous (well DUH!!!), Screening nurse tells me I'm not in too bad of shape for sixty two years of age (always told you fickers that round was a shape.), Radiology Technician was a HOTTY!!!!!(blonde hair, blue eyes, good lookin MOMMA!!! Yeah honey, can you help this old guy out of the wheel chair and up on the table? Yeah, that's it, just let me put my hand right there to get a firm grip on you), E Room Doc tells me I was extremely lucky (told him after riding forty five plus years I prefer to call it skill. Luck would have been no physical injury at all.) and Technician who was putting on glass cast was showing me pics of her Gold Wing and telling me where she like to ride for a cold one. (nice lady, liked her the best.)
Off to see Orthopedic specialist today for more of what I'm sure will be wonderful news.....
Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Planting your foot down was riding skills? Maybe, but you were lucky.
Tar snake or not, it seems that you hit the front brake too hard. Use some more of the rear next time...
Good luck with the exams!

This is why I like linked brakes on the VFR.

that cop. there is NO law that says you have to leave the roadway, much less actually cause a wreck in doing so. only thing you are obligated to do is yield the right of way which it sounds like you did. did you happen to catch the city the cop car belonged to? If you did, I would file a complaint

Did you go back to see if the snake was ok? Probably should have put him in the saddlebag and got him to a vet.

Great story, and I am glad you dodged the drop. Mr. Policeman seemed a bit out of line to me. Best wishes on healing up, and getting back on, and riding safe.

I definitely would have dropped my bike. I can't hold it up with one leg. Then I would have complained like crazy to get the police dept/county/city (whoever) to pay for my damages.

I'm glad you're relatively okay, but that still sucks.
