Wanted:Ref or Umpire Job? Where to go?

Ok, MH peeps. I am looking for a PT job on the weekends. When I lived in Chicago I was heavily involved in Reffing basketball games and umpiring baseball games for the local Jr. High and High School as well as the park district (rec. depts) in the area. I had to go through several training courses and had to take tests prior to being allowed to officiate games in the IHSA (Illinois High School Sports Assoc.) program. Does anyone have experience doing this in the Houston area? What is the pay like? How often do you get games? and do you have to work your way up in order to ref the "better" (more competitive) games? Any info helps. Thanks

you get as many games as you want, my first year i did 2 games every night during the season, by the thrid year I was doing varsity championships. Just depends on how reliable you are and if you can keep up with the kids. Also how well you handle the pressure of the big games.

Check with ASA (http://www.asasoftball.com/).

I coach girls softball. Our league usually picks a few umpires and sticks with them for the whole season. This way they get familiar with the rules and such. Call around to the local leagues and hopefully you can get your foot in the door.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll check into the site ya'll posted.

I've dealt with my fair share of "big games" in the past. I use to do tournaments and the like at the high school level. I've had my fair share of outta control parents and coaches. Not to boast, but in the past I never really had too many off participants (coaches, parents, and players) as I'm pretty good when it comes to paying close attention to the game I am officiating. Once again, thanks guys.
