At least the $50 plus bucks an hour won't feel so bad.

Stocking enough gear for people to try stuff on would be big. There are only a few shops that do that. One false move can kill ya with the traffic this site gets. Keep that in mind.

I don't stunt but hopefully you have a big enough parking lot for the guys to come stunt privately without the police running everyone. That would be nice.

mount and balance tires at a "reasonable" price

Keep a good stock of moto oil and filters

It will be hard to stock up for every style of bike out there, but basic stuff like chains, helmet visors for major brands, selection of gloves would be nice.

Besides the obvious parts, gear, etc. I would like any shop that I visit to have great customer service, this includes the mechanics also. There have been a few times were the reception is great but the mechanic is a total jackass and it just kills the visit.

i been in business for myself for quite some time now and i've realized a few things...

A. Most people (especially from the internet) want everything dirt cheap or price matched from some internet website and you'll probably take a loss because you have to charge sales tax.

B. You can't please everyone, they already came in knowing they will complain/

C. the golden patron. chivalry still lives in these guys/gals. they believe in quality work and are willing to pay your price. all they ask for is honesty and fairness. keeping these customers happy will keep your rent/bills paid and food on your table.

as for the A's and B's, they'll hop around from shop to shop just looking for the best deal and when they feel like they got the shaft or if the work wasn't to their liking, they'll blast you all over the very same place they found you (on the internet). dont get too caught up in pricewars and bashing shops, just do your thing, be fair, honest, and a genuinely kind businessman.... i'm sure everything will work out just fine.

oh yeah, and a little prayer here and there to the man might not be such a bad idea either.

best of luck to you!

+1 to what everyone has said so far and ESPECIALLY customer service. I don't mind paying extra for good customer service and honesty goes a long way as well.

I helped start up a motorcycle shop years ago with a good friend of mine and one thing that we did to get people to keep coming back was if it's your first time in the store, you get 15% off anything. You can buy as much as you want or order as much as you like and get 15% off. People really liked that.

That made for a wide open door for return customers.

Invest in a tire machine and balancer if you havn't already thought about that. That's a consistant money maker.

Get stickers made and give out sponsorships. Even small discounts go a long way for getting your name out there on race days and events.

Good luck with it! It's hard to get going but very rewarding.

The last guy around here that opened up a shop and had a "chill" spot didn't make it in the business too long. Same with the guy who offering unbelievable tire deals.....don't sell yourself short.

That is exactly what I keep telling my current motorcycle mechanic here in Austin. He's always been straightforward, honest, upfront, excellent with me yet he keeps giving out unbelievable deals that I know... can't keep him afloat long-term. He keeps telling me that it's really hard to make it out there which I totally believe but his work and passion absolutely speak for himself so... don't sell yourself short... was my advice to him. I am also a small business owner myself. Red is not a good company color.

Since I already gave the best advice in this thread, I will dish out another tidbit for you. Look at what other SUCCESSFUL shops are doing and copy that. Then you can try to tweak things and improve after you get a feel for things. The shops that are making it, are making it for a reason, no need to reinvent the wheel.

Don't be closed on Mondays...F*ck I hate that. No offense to Motorcycles Unlimited, a lot of shops are closed mondays and it's a real .

Good luck...

I've seen quite a few come and go. It's a tough racket. IMO

Stock stator covers.
